  • Bethany Joy Lenz - One Tree Hill, a Secret Cult, and Living a Double Life
    Nov 6 2024

Today our guest is actor, musician, and now author Bethany Joy Lenz, whom we will just call Joy. Joy was the star of hit TV show One Tree Hill, and today she’s going to talk to us about how she was in a Christian cult the whole time she was filming the show. She’ll tell us about her upbringing and her career as a young actor, living in LA on her own and joining a small Bible study group that seemed like the perfect place to share a community with like-minded young Christian actors, and how a charismatic preacher named Les began showing up, leading the meetings, and changing everything.

She’ll tell us about going to a house in Idaho they called the “God spa,” how she was drugged at the house (but did not realize until later), and how Les began to exert more and more control over her life - including isolating her from her family and taking over her finances, which were being drained without her knowledge the entire time she was working on a hit television show - and how the group’s hold over her led her to turning down her dream role in her dream Broadway play.

Plus, how she discovered her money was gone and finally decided to leave.

  • Anne - Psychosis, Delusions, & the Cult of Your Own Mind
    Oct 31 2024

Today, our guest is a friend who we'll call Anne. We discuss the connection between psychosis and cults, the mental changes Anne experienced when her episode started, the delusions that grew stronger, how she felt like she was communicating with spirits, the paranoia that grew inside her, and how a psychiatric mental health professional helped pull her out of it. We also compare the similarities of Anne's experience with that of many cult leaders, how coming out of a paranoid delusion is similar to coming out of a cult belief, and why it can be wise NOT to directly attack the beliefs of someone experiencing a psychotic episode.

  • REWIND: Jitarth Jadeja - Former QAnon Believer
    Oct 23 2024

Episode 15: Lola and Meagan interview Jitarth Jadeja, former QAnon believer. He tells the girls about how, despite being Australian, he first was a Bernie supporter, then shifted his support to Trump before becoming obsessed with conspiracy theories. They discuss the two years of his life in which he believed in Q, the moment he realized it was all a lie, how he'd have gone to the Capitol if he'd still believed, and what he suggests you should do if a loved one has fallen into QAnon. Featured Article: Delve into the Darker Side of Human Nature with the 15 Best Podcasts About Cults

Cults are fascinating. There’s something curiosity-inducing about stories of ordinary people who get wrapped up in groupthink that quickly veers into dangerous territory. Part of the appeal is because we think it could never happen to us, even though we suspect, deep down, that it absolutely could. These listens explore the nature of cults, the figures who lead them, and the followers who have been lured into their orbits.

Interested in critical thinking? Listen to this!

This podcast has taught me so much. Basically, no one person has all the answers. Each week I find myself learning more about not only myself but the world and people around me. Lola and Meagan are refreshingly open minded. It's important to hear people out.

Hard topic, handled with humor

Thank you for using humor to lighten the weight of this heavy topic. I am a curious person and constantly seek knowledge on a wide variety of topics. The topics you tackle on your show can be difficult to learn about, but you make it easier to listen.

Compassionate and well researched

The hosts have a good dynamic and, along with their producers, clearly research their subject matter carefully. I appreciate Lola and Meagan's compassionate approach, as well as their rapport and humor, not only with one another but just as often with their guests. Lola is usually the primary interviewer and cerebral in the best sense of the word, although Meagan seems to be asking more questions during the course of recent podcasts. That is great, as Meagan is a good interviewer as well, who asks the questions the audience--at least this audience member--is wondering about. And she has a great sense of comedic timing, often telling stories in a deadpan style that is very funny, whether it is developed or simply comes natural to her.

I have heard Lola state that she sometimes gets negative feedback to her commentary on politicized topics that on occasion serves as a kind of prologue to the weekly interview with a cult survivor or expert. I would encourage both hosts to discuss whatever they damn well please during the course of the show they worked so hard to build. The only antidote to the toxic lies that have infected so much of media is the frank, intelligent and compassionate approach of the hosts and producers of projects such as "Trust Me."

Well done. I hope the podcast continues as long as possible.

Very listenable show. Please check your decade oriented comments. Like so many things we can be 'woke' to, we generalize at our peril...

thank you

I wanted this episode to keep going. I have difficulty in this area of life and love hearing people speaking about sexuality without embarrassment or being self consciousness.
