Her accolades include the former Ann Arbor Business Review’s “Most Influential Women” Award, the Miss America Women of Achievement Award, and the Michigan Small Business Journalist of the Year Award. Her impact extends beyond broadcasting, making her a true Ann Arbor icon. In 1878, a schooner carrying rye seeds sank in Lake Huron, preserving its cargo underwater for 146 years. Recently recovered, these seeds are now at Michigan State University (MSU). Researchers at MSU, led by Eric Olson, have isolated DNA from the seeds and plan to sequence the genome, setting the stage for future genome engineering projects. The extraction process involved pulverizing 288 seeds and using modern chemistry to isolate DNA, which is unique to these seeds.
