Strawberry Spring

By: iHeartPodcasts and Audio Up Inc.
  • Summary

  • Based on the short story by Stephen King, Strawberry Spring is a scripted podcast set against the backdrop of the sixties revolution on the campus of New Sharon College. We follow a generation of students who don't trust authority, the futile efforts of the local police, and a young, determined reporter as he chases the bloody trail of Springheel Jack, an unrelenting, modern-day Jack the Ripper. After vanishing and leaving his murders unsolved, Jack is back - along with a new Strawberry Spring, a weather pattern with an unusual fog bank that rolls in every eight years. Using the fog to hide his tracks, he taunts New Sharon with fresh kills, each murder more violent than the last. The 8-episode season stars Garrett Hedlund, Milo Ventimiglia, Sydney Sweeney, Herizen Guardiola, Al Madrigal, Ken Marino, and Brec Bassinger.

Read the Short Story Instead

I definitely agree with the other reviewers that the sound effects/music in this podcast just don't work well. Obviously, it can be difficult to portray an inner monolog via audio, and this just wasn't successful.
It's also really disappointing that they made the "twist" sooo obvious in the podcast. By the second half of the first episode, you know what's going on! This is NOT the way the story is written, where the twist is a true surprise. I definitely recommend the short story instead.

I wanted to like this

Good story poorly executed. There were many ways they could have adapted the story to a performance. They chose poorly. Actors were good though.

Lacking.

The performance of the story could be better. Rachael and Anne voice performances are not good and quite annoying. The seem more like the disinterested youth of today's time rather than a concerned wife or dedicated journalist.

One sound over effect, such as when Henry is thinking, is extremely loud! So loud that I turn down the volume, but then I can't hear the narration. This has happened throughout the series, but episode 4 was particularly loud. This loud ringing, echoing sound is enough to give me a migraine!

The story is set in the 60s/70s, but the language seems much more modern. There are the occasional indications of time frame, such as a year of a car or Vietnam vet in his 20s.. but it doesn't feel very 60s/70s in style.

Meh. Predictable but entertaining.

One of those stories you think “lots of authors write a lot of crap, only my guy publishes all of it. “
Huge fan, I’ll die with a crappy book in my hand.

Okay diversion

The usual Stephen King psycho horror tropes with trite dialogue and some REALLY bad acting, especially the women.
Surely there are TALENTED out-of-work actors who will work cheaply.

So terrible

I love Stephen King and all his books, but this is just so awful. So predictable.

Very disappointing.

I'd hoped that this would be much better. This dramatization takes too many liberties with Stephen King's excellent short story.

WTF did I just listen to?!?!

Holy crap.
Don’t waste your time listening to this swill.
I knew by the end of the first episode who the villain was. It was just outright obvious, so obvious in fact, that I figured there would be a twist. It couldn’t be that easy, I mean, right?
Wrong 😑.

Skip this one, seriously.
