    Shri Bhagavad Gita Chapter 14, Verse 5

    Sanskrit Verse:
    सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणा: प्रकृतिसम्भवा: |
    निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम् || 5||

    Transliteration:
    Sattvaṁ rajas tama iti guṇāḥ prakṛti-sambhavāḥ |
    Nibadhnanti mahā-bāho dehe dehinam avyayam ||

    Translation:
    O mighty-armed (Arjuna), the three modes of material nature—sattva (goodness), rajas (passion), and tamas (ignorance)—arise from nature and bind the imperishable soul to the body.

    Meaning:

    Modes of Nature: The verse introduces the three gunas or qualities of nature—sattva (goodness, purity), rajas (activity, desire), and tamas (ignorance, inertia). Binding Nature: These qualities arise from prakriti (material nature) and act as forces that bind the eternal soul (atman) to the physical body and material existence. Influence on the Soul: While the soul is eternal and unchanging, it gets entangled in worldly experiences due to the influence of these gunas. Objective of Understanding: Recognizing these modes and their effects on life is essential for spiritual liberation.
