  • Summary

  • Mary Rowlandson was caught in a battle between King Philip's men and Puritan colonists in 1676. She was taken captive along with her sister and three children. John Hoar of Concord was dispatched to buy her freedom from the Wampanoag leader. While she would be reunited with her husband in Boston, only two of her children made it back with her.

Mary was a victim of King Philip's War and went on to write the first worldwide bestselling book about her experiences. Readers around the globe were introduced to colonial life and the brutal warfare with Native American tribes. This is her history and her story. Read more about King Philip!
