  • General Videla Part 2: Mr Clean’s Dirty War
    Nov 6 2024
Videla’s dirty war begins. ‘Subversives’ are rooted out, with torture centres established across the land - including one known as the ‘Argentine Auschwitz’. Education, music, children’s books and haircuts are subjected to new regulations. And as the Junta garners international attention, Videla will employ elaborate means to gloss over the atrocities… A Noiser production, written by John Bartlett. Many thanks to Edward Brudney, Robert Cox, Marguerite Feitlowitz, Francesca Lessa, Sara Méndez, Ernesto Semán. This is Part 2 of 4. Get every episode of Real Dictators a week early with Noiser+. • General Videla Part 1: The Skinny One and the Witch
    Oct 30 2024
Argentina. The story of a gaunt, hawkish man who earned the nickname “the Hitler of the Pampa”. A man whose awkward bearing belied his capacity for cruelty. A dictator who literally stole the children of his prisoners. In 1925, Jorge Rafael Videla is born into a country at a crossroads. But no one can imagine just how deeply he will impact Argentina over the next 87 years… A Noiser production, written by John Bartlett. • BONUS: Dictators’ Books
    Sep 24 2024
Almost every dictator, at one time or another, has put pen to paper. Some have wrestled with ideas, with philosophy. Many have merely vented - spewing their diatribes onto the page. Others have made forays into fiction, poetry and drama… with varying degrees of success. Noiser writer Duncan Barrett spoke to a man who’s made it his mission to wade through all kinds of dictators’ writings. Daniel Kalder is author of The Infernal Library, also published as Dictator Literature: A History of Bad Books by Terrible People. Scroll down the Real Dictators feed for episodes on the dictators mentioned in this conversation. The stories of Jorge Rafael Videla and Benito Mussolini will be coming later this year. Beautifully narrated, exquisitely detailed, and well-organized. I live in dread of reaching the last episode.

Doctors-Their times

The many dictators were all calm and determined in their own ways. If you like history this book will excite you even when evil is strong.

I'm Hooked

Listened to all episodes within a few days, and I can honestly say that I've learned more about world events in the most engaging and factual story-telling drama series I've ever heard. The background music or the noise of guns, or planes, or bombs helps to stir each event to life. Narrator is superb. Bring on more episodes please!

The most in depth history podcast I've ever listen

I subscribe to many podcasts. There's a lot of history in my list, but this has gone far and away beyond any other history podcast that I've heard. Truth be told, I didn't know what to expect when I first saw that cover art but I was intrigued when I heard Paul McGann was the narrator (he's the 8th Doctor for any fellow Whovians out there).

The series on Hitler (15 episodes so far, as of this writing) is astounding! I thought I knew enough based on various sources, but this takes you through a fine-toothed comb explanation of the lives of these madmen.

It's quickly become one of my favorites and I try to listen to it daily.
