When I started my coaching business, if you would have asked me my marketing approach I would have said “I let people know I’m a coach and offer a free sample coaching sessions to enroll clients.

Did that approach work for me? Not a wit.

Even though I got a lot of praise for the sessions, people who had a free session said “Thanks” but no interest in long term coaching came about.

It took me a long time to realize why my mindset and actions weren’t paying off.

I’m a bit surprised when I look at coach’s website and see them trying this same approach.

I feel so much compassion for you if you’re in that place and I am instantly transported back to my own frustration early on – working so hard and not getting results.

When I work with coaches to help them nail their niche, I ask lots of powerful questions, which uncover clues to a natural audience and niche for them.

Over time I’ve witnessed 4 major patterns with coaches — what I call ARCHETYPES — that influence how a coach could become successful in their niche.

These archetypes are a subconscious leaning and not necessarily a conscious choice. Two caveats ...

· You might not relate to any of these archetypes. After all, these 5 come out of my experience.

· One clear archetype might not yet be awakened until you launch your business and something blooms within you.

I’ll explain each. If you relate to this concept, allow just ONE ARCHETYPE to rise to the surface like cream so it can guide your coaching business rather than diluting it with 2 or more.

If you’re a new coach, this is a cautionary tale. If you’re not charging for coaching or charging low fees, I’m especially talking to you.

A coach contacted me who was 5 years into their business and they weren’t earning yet.

They were considering quitting but really didn’t want to and invested in a Strategy Session with me to see what I thought they should do.

This coach gave me permission to share details of our conversation. I’ll call her Sherrie.

Back when Sherrie finished coach training the pandemic hit, so having a big heart and feeling like people needed help, started coaching for free.

But years later, this coach was still giving free weekly sessions to her only clients just hoping that at some point, they would value her services and start paying her.

She was stuck in what I call Perpetual Student mode and was convinced that it was her client’s role to value her in order for her to earn well.
