The Case of the Body in the Sack - An Irish Murder Story
News of the Times Episode 382 | 1928
1927 County Louth Ireland. The good Reverend M’Keone has two staff within his house who sadly do not get along. 28 year old Mary Callan who runs all things pertaining to his household, and Gerard Toal, an 18 year old young man who takes care of all things pertaining to the outside of the premises such as gardening and car mechanics.

The relationship between Mary and Toal starts off badly when she refuses to do his laundry. Toal’s response when negated or upbraided is one of sullen and simmering quiet. Mary, who keep an eye on the young lad believes she has caught him stealing eggs and reports the matter to her employer, reverend M’Keone. There is no proof, other than her word. Toal is once again upbraided and now he is in simmering anger.

Shortly thereafter, Reverend M’Keone goes away to a conference and comes back home in the evening to find no Mary. He never sees her again.

The disappearance of Mary consumes her best friend Peggy. Eventually, much through her efforts, Mary is found – in parts.

We take a look at this extraordinary story – the background, the characters, the build-up, and the capture of the murderer of the Body in the Sack in County Louth, Ireland.

  • The Case of the Prussian Serial Killer

The Case of the Prussian Serial Killer
News of the Times Episode 381 | 1862
1862 saw two major figures whose crimes went beyond nightmare: France’s Martin Dumollard and Prussia’s Karl Masch.

Prussia’s Karl Masch admitted to killing 13, although it was firmly believed by authorities at the time that his murder count was much higher. The killings were senseless and brutal. His preferred implement was an axe.

No age or gender impacted his murderous rampage. Like Dumollard, he was known to outrage his deceased victims. Maasch’s murder spree, with his brother and mother involved, went on for several years. Although he was suspected, he could not be found.

Then one day, some labourers on the way to work are caught in the rain. To minimise becoming so wet, they walk through woods and by chance, see Masch descending underground.

We take a look at the background, the crimes and the capture of Maasch and his family in today’s episode of the Case of the Prussian Serial Killer.

The Canadian Monster - Joseph LaPage
News of the Times Episode 390 | 1870
1874 Vermont and an absolutely horrific crime has been perpetuated on a district schoolteacher. She is nude and has been violently assaulted and outraged post death. Investigations are begun in earnest but their prime suspect has a solid alibi. With a lack of evidence he is released. He and his family leave the state.

1875 New Hampshire and a young girl on her way to school is forcibly taken, brutalised and outraged. This is followed by her head being cut off and left wrapped in her waterproof away from the body. Suspects are taken in and questioned.

However, the horrendous murder is reported in the national papers and spotted by a resident in the town where the school teacher was so terribly murdered. He puts the two crimes together placing in sight one primary suspect.

These shocking crimes involved such dreadful brutality to the victims that much of it could not be placed in the papers but can be found in the trial transcripts.

We take a look at the man they called the Canadian monster – the background, the crimes, and the capture in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
