Morry Frenkel speaks with Josh Burns MP, Labor’s Federal Member for Macnamara, about the recommendations of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights’ recently tabled report of the Inquiry into Antisemitism in Australian Universities. Josh, who was chair of the committee, discusses the need for universities to quickly take on board those recommendations directed at them, as the academic year has already commenced. He also talks about the universities’ definition of antisemitism, a slight variation of that drawn up by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and the establishment of on-campus ‘safe rooms’ for Jewish students. Finally, Josh discusses the inability of The Greens to speak out against antisemitism in Australia.

Maurice Klein speaks with Joanne Levy, President of the Sassoon Yehuda Synagogue which is an Orthodox Sephardi Synagogue and Community centre, with a diverse membership from the Middle East, India, Africa and Asia, providing a warm inviting spiritual home for all Jews irrespective of their observance. Joanne, tells us about the new Sephardi Museum in the synagogue, which no doubt will further foster a sense of pride within the Sephardi community, exhibiting their heritage to their community, visitors, schools, plus honouring the past community. The Sephardi Association of Victoria was established in 1965 and will be celebrating its 60th throughout the year, culminating with a major event in November. Jamie describes the work of a film distributor and producer, and about his decision to establish the Jewish Australian Screen Fund (JASF) in 2024 as part of Jump Street Films. JASF is partnering with the Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF) to relaunch the JIFF Short Film Fund, which this year will exclusively support film projects that “address any aspect of the post-October 7 landscape for Australian Jewry".
