This episode I am joined with Lindsay Swoboda who is the author of Holding On and Letting Go, A Life In Motion. She is also married to her husband who is an Active Duty Marine where they were stationed overseas for nearly 10 years out of their 21 year career. She talks about her passion for dance and how she was able to connect on base with other spouses and to find new friends. At the end of this episode she reads a passage from her book and it just really brings words to the hearts of those yearning to find the friendships that make us feel like home in a new duty station.

See below for a book description from Lindsay:

Lindsay is a young dancer with big dreams who marries a Marine, pivoting from her passions to a decade of global unknowns. Each season and location in her life offers nuanced questions. Who must she say hello and goodbye to as orders push their family onward? What will her purpose be at each duty station? What does it mean to hold the tension of both the bitter and sweet in military family life? Can surrendering to the mission to support her service member also be considered a celebration? Each chapter captures the complex duality of layered changes during their rapid relocations.

Lindsay launches herself into career progression in California, kicks off a new dance program on base in Korea, and loses herself to motherhood in Hawaii while rediscovering the writer she used to be. Morocco offers healing for her marriage, which was seated on the edge of collapse from back-to-back deployments. After the brief stability of family and career is forged in Ecuador, a city fire, riots, and a high-risk pregnancy remind her there is uncertainty even in what appeared to be a peace-filled chapter. With almost a decade of overseas life, the Swoboda family nestles in Virginia in time for the COVID-19 pandemic.

In every unexpected twist and turn of her life, Lindsay builds strength in self-awareness to cope with the struggles she faces. She grows in her understanding that she must feel the gamut of emotions that come with unforeseen change. More significant relationships are forged when she lets others in to share the burden and brilliance of each season. The frequent upheaval and unknown challenges are exhausting, but there is also an invitation to pursue unimaginable growth, intense connection, curiosity, love, and adventure.
