  • Summary

  • We've all heard of fake news, but what about fake history?

Dominic Sandbrook explores two and a half millennia of human history, traveling from the American Deep South to the air raid shelters of wartime Britain, to discover how the past has constantly been manipulated, rewritten and reshaped.

It turns out that when it comes to history, separating fact from fiction isn't always easy. Many of the widely held beliefs about our past are based on a web of lies.

Nothing terribly deep, but perfectly entertaining

Even casual students of history should probably know most of the accounts presented here. Perhaps Americans would be more familiar with the laughable Lost Cause narratives, and British more aware of the Levellers and the mythology created around the Blitz. But all the stories are presented in a accessible manner, and are supremely listenable. It may be that a few references, while relating the narcissism of authoritarian rulers, to a particular modern day orange cretin, may have colored the reviews of some thin skinned listeners. Like in the headline, not a terribly deep dive into history, but for what it's worth, a fine effort and good listen.

not very indepth, but good

my first podcast.. I enjoyed every episode. not awfully detailed, but still very informative! well organized and delivered. some things are not that surprising. yet some subjects I didn't realize how off the contemporary view was.
info I've not heard of was easy to absorb and I liked each episode very much. plus these high lights of history(stories from all recent and ancient times)... give me a chance to become aware of a time I would like to know more about, but not heard of hitherto.

Hit and misses in equal measure

There were some good episodes and some incredibly tedious ones. Hard to recommend this series based on the good parts though. It's not bad; there's just too much good podcast content in the world to recommend mediocrity.
