Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing Veritaserum- an incredibly powerful (and I feel, underutilized) potion that forces individuals to reveal the truth.

"It is Veritaserum — a Truth Potion so powerful that three drops would have you spilling your innermost secrets for this entire class to hear. Now, the use of this potion is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. But unless you watch your step, you might just find that my hand slips — right over your evening pumpkin juice. And then, Potter... then we'll find out whether you've been in my office or not."

Besides maybe Felix Felicis, Polyjuice Potion and Amortentia- I feel as though Veritaserum AKA ‘Truth’ Serum is one of the most powerful potions in the entire Wizarding World. And given this fact, I can’t help but notice that it’s ludicrously underutilized (at least in the series).

Are we really supposed to believe that, over the course of wizarding history, only two dark wizards have created Horcruxes?

Today we’re going to be tackling the question of…Did MORE wizards create Horcruxes than we realize? And if not, why didn’t they?

Durmstrang’s true ‘claim to fame’ or rather ‘notorious hallmark’ was one of its former pupils: Gellert Grindelwald. Grindelwald permanently stained the school’s reputation by pushing the boundaries of dark magic even FURTHER than the school permitted, eventually being expelled for ‘twisted, dark experiments’ and ‘near-fatal attacks’ on students.

But what exactly did Gellert Grindelwald do? Durmstrang was notorious for allowing its students to explore the darker side of magic..How far did he really push that boundary?

As these attacks and experiments were never explored in detail, today I’m going to be taking a look at a few theories.

According to Hermione’s research, there are only 7 known Animagi from the last CENTURY. In fact, the ability is SO RARE that those who are able to successfully become an Animagus are required to register with the ministry.

So..My question is: WHY are there so few? How is it that this powerful ability is so underutilized in wizarding society? And what happens to those who have tried and FAILED?

But perhaps most importantly: Why haven’t the most powerful and gifted wizards like Voldemort and Dumbledore attempted it? Or..Have they?

But my question is..Why isn’t it used more often? NO, I don’t WANT it to be used more often, but it does feel a little underutilized in the series given how powerful it truly is.

Sure, it’s an ‘Unforgivable curse’- but what’s REALLY stopping a Dark Wizard from using it? Especially one that’s already been to Azkaban and embraced a life of crime? Why risk losing a duel when you can end it with one simple spell? I mean, it’s unblockable and irreversible…The perfect weapon.
