Becoming GreatThe Art of GreatnessJon FredricksToday's Scripture: Luke 22:24-30 NIV__________ Luke 22:24-30 NIV24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. John 15:13 NIVGreater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Philippians 2:5–7 NIV5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. Matthew 25:21 NIV“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Proverbs 25:21 NIVIf your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. 1 Peter 4:8 NIVAbove all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1) LEARN TO HUMBLY RECEIVEJohn 13:2-8 NIVThe evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 2) TAKE TIME TO SEE WHAT GOD MIGHT SEEMatthew 5:41 NIVIf anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 1 John 4:20 NIVWhoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. Galatians 6:2 NIVCarry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3) DEDICATE DAILY WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN ME1 Peter 4:10 NIV10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. Acts 9:36 NIV36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. Acts 9:39 NIVPeter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. 4) TRUST GOD FOR OUR DEFICITHebrews 6:10 NIVGod is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. Colossians 3:24 NIV24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 2 Corinthians 9:10 NIVNow he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

    Becoming Great

    Greatness Requires a Team

    Jon Fredricks

    Today's Scripture: Luke 22:7-23 NIV

    __________

    Luke 22:7-23 NIV

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this….

    Luke 22:24 NIV

A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.

    Ephesians 2:10 NIV

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

    Psalm 23:5 NIV

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

    Luke 22:30 NIV

so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

    Exodus 25:30 NIV

30 Put the bread of the Presence on this table to be before me at all times.

    1) MAKE SPACE FOR A TABLE IN YOUR LIFE

    Leviticus 19:9-10 NIV

9 “‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.

    Matthew 5:41 NIV

If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

    Psalm 46:10 NIV

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

    2) MAKE ROOM FOR PEOPLE IN YOUR HEART

    Luke 22:17-18 NIV

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

    John 19:29 NIV

A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

    John 13:34 NIV

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

    3) MAKE ROOM IN YOUR HEART FOR PEOPLE

    1 John 4:20 NIV

Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

    Matthew 22:37-39 NIV

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him. ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25‬:‭31‬-‭32‬‬“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 2) JESUS ALREADY WON! 3) SO STAND! PUT ON YOUR ARMOR ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬‬Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. PUT ON YOUR ARMOR: BELT & BREASTPLATE ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭14‬‬Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭33‬‬But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. PUT ON YOUR ARMOR: SHOES FOR YOUR FEET ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭15‬‬and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. ‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭27‬‬Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. ‭‭2 Thessalonians‬ ‭2‬:‭15‬‬So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. PUT ON YOUR ARMOR: SHIELD OF FAITH ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭16‬‬In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5‬:‭4‬‬For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. PUT ON YOUR ARMOR: HELMET OF SALVATION & SWORD OF THE SPIRIT ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭17‬‬and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭2‬‬I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Walk

    Today’s Scripture: Luke 21:20-28 NIV

    __________

    Luke 21:20-28 NIV

20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

    Luke 21:28 MSG

When all this starts to happen, up on your feet. Stand tall with your heads high. Help is on the way!

    Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV

1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

    Matthew 9:5 NIV

Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?

    1) WEIGH THE COST

    Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV

8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

    2) ACT

    Proverbs 29:18 KJV

18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

    3) LOSE LIMITING LANGUAGE

    1 Corinthians 2:9 NIV

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

    1 Corinthians 1:27 NIV

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

    2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

    4) KEEP WALKING THE PATH

    Ephesians 5:15-17 ESV

Look carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but at wise; redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

    Isaiah 52:2-7 NIV

    2 Shake off your dust;
    rise up, sit enthroned, Jerusalem.
Free yourself from the chains on your neck,
    Daughter Zion, now a captive.

3 For this is what the Lord says:

    “You were sold for nothing,
and without money you will be redeemed.”

4 For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

    “At first my people went down to Egypt to live;
    lately, Assyria has oppressed them.

5 “And now what do I have here?” declares the Lord.

“For my people have been taken away for nothing,
and those who rule them mock,”
    declares the Lord.
    “And all day long
    my name is constantly blasphemed.
    6 Therefore my people will know my name;
therefore in that day they will know
that it is I who foretold it.
    Yes, it is I.”

7 How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
    who proclaim peace,
    who bring good tidings,
    who proclaim salvation,
    who say to Zion,
    “Your God reigns!”

What to Do on the Worst Day

    Jon Fredricks

    Today’s Scripture: Luke 21:7-19 NIV

    __________

    Luke 21:7-19 NIV

7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me. 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. 15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.

    Luke 21:19 KJV

“In your patience possess ye your souls.”

    Psalm 27:14 NIV

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

    Psalm 46:10 NIV

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

    Romans 8:28 NASB

28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

    1) STAY FOCUSED ON TRUE

    Luke 21:8 NIV

8 He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.

    James 4:8a NIV

Dispute Over Whose Children Jesus’ Opponents Are

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

    John 16:33 NIV

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

    2) INTENTIONALLY TRUST

    Luke 21:9 NIV

When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

    Proverbs 29:25 NIV

Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.

    Luke 21:14 NIV

But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.

    3) TELL OF THE GOODNESS OF GOD

    Today’s Scripture: Luke 20:41-44 ESV

    __________

    2 Timothy 3:16 ESV

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

    Psalm 119:11 ESV

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

    Colossians 3:16 ESV

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

    James 1:21-22 ESV

Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

    Luke 20:41-44 ESV

    Whose Son is the Christ?

41 But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David's son? 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at my right hand,
43 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’

44 David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”

    Matthew 22:41-42 ESV

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They weren’t able to answer – Jesus stumps them.

    Romans 12:2 ESV

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

    1 John 2:15-17 ESV

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

    1) REAL CHANGE HAPPENS WHEN WE READ SCRIPTURE

    John 1:1-5 KJV

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

    2) REAL CHANGE HAPPENS WHEN WE EXAMINE SCRIPTURE

    Luke 24:44-47 ESV

Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

    3) REAL CHANGE HAPPENS WHEN WE APPLY SCRIPTURE

    2 Peter 1:3-7 ESV

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.

REAL Change Managing My Feed Jon Fredricks Today’s Scripture: Luke 20:45-47 NIV __________ Luke 20:45-47 NIV Warning Against the Teachers of the Law 45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” 2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 1 Peter 2:2 NIV Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 1) GROWTH DEPENDS ON HIS PRESENCE AND HIS WORD John 15:1-7 NIV The Vine and the Branches 15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. John 6:68 NIV Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Matthew 4:4 NIV Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Joshua 1:8 NIV Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 2) GOD REDEEMED ME INTO A NECESSARY FAMILY Psalm 68:6 NIV God sets the lonely in families… 1 John 1:7 NIV But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. Acts 2:42-47 NIV The Fellowship of the Believers 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Matthew 16:18 NIV And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 3) GOD GROWS ME AS I DEPLOY IN SERVICE Mark 10:45 NIV For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Ephesians 2:10 NIV 4) REACHING OUT TRANSFORMS TWO LIVES Matthew 28:18-20 NIV 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Isaiah 55:2 NIV
