Cultural Funding Hits Lowest Levels Since 2004

  • Summary

  • Sweden's state funding for culture, media, and adult education has fallen to levels not seen since 2004. A new report by the Agency for Cultural Policy Analysis reveals that cultural allocations accounted for just 1.2% of total government spending in 2023, the lowest share in nearly two decades. While other government expenditures have risen, cultural budgets have remained stagnant. This drop is largely attributed to the discontinuation of pandemic-related subsidies, compounded by inflation, which further reduced the real value of these funds. Meanwhile, local and regional cultural spending showed nominal increases in 2023 but declined when adjusted for inflation.
