• Tony Parker Interview - Medusa
    Feb 7 2025
Bouncer union unit! To the best of my knowledge, this is the second time we've hosted a former bouncer on the show. It's not something I normally get to discuss and definitely the first time I've ever gotten to ask the question, "What was your Marvel bouncer personality?" But this isn't a podcast about bouncing, it's actually all about one of my favorite graphic novels of 2024, it's just that bouncing actually can be applied to the book. That book is Medusa from Dark Horse Comics created by writer/illustrator Tony Parker who is today's show guest. If you aren't yet familiar with the project, it's one of the most creative reimaginings of Greek mythology I've ever seen. Show topics include the unique character designs of a silent protagonist, collaborating with colorist extraordinaire Tamra Bonvillain, and the use of pacing and kinesics in storytelling which is something I've been increasingly mindful of in the medium. From the publisher Everything you know about Medusa is a lie. Forever cursed to be remembered as a monster, this ageless yet very mortal hero has spent millennia saving humanity from the horrors of legend. But now, today, in Scotland, she has met a foe that makes even the gods hide in fear. Armed with unwavering resolve, will the mighty Medusa be able to save mankind one last time? • Ron Marz Interview
    Feb 4 2025
Today's guest on the Cryptid Creator Corner needs no introduction, but here goes anyway. Among others, he's written for Marvel (Silver Surfer), DC (Green Lantern), Dynamite, Valiant, Image, Dark Horse, and CrossGen. He's written Batman/Aliens, DC versus Marvel, Green Lantern versus Aliens, and the Amalgam Comic Doctor StrangeFate. He wrote Hal Jordan becoming a villain, basically started the "Women in Refrigerators" trope, and withstood the H.E.A.T. of a mid-90s campaign to have him fired from writing DC Comics. It's Ron Marz! Ron joins Jimmy to talk about his long career in comics, the stories he likes to tell, and which characters he still hopes to tackle. Ron talks about some of his experiences attending conventions all over the World and why he enjoys them. This is a wide-ranging conversation with one of the greats. • Tom Sniegoski Interview - The Herculoids
    Jan 31 2025
When Dynamite solicited the return of The Herculoids into the comics medium, I was immediately concerned. Oh no, who's writing it? It is such a beloved childhood property of mine. Who could do it justice? Then my fears were allayed when saw Tom Sniegoski was at the reins. Given his background working on other major properties like Hellboy and Vampirella with their own distinct and important legacies, I knew he'd be the perfect fit. I'd been meaning to catch up with Tom for quite some time now so this was the perfect opportunity to get him back on the show to dive into what turns out is a shared love of this weird old Hanna Barbera cartoon property. In the episode, Tom shares his childhood connection to it, the challenges of translating all these non-speaking creatures front and center in comic book form, and the collaboration process with artist Craig Rousseau to interpret the original designs of Alex Toth. We also carve out some time to hear about his other projects and how comics can engage new young readers, something I always seem to be bringing up lately. The Herculoids hits shelves this February. Make sure to call your shop and reserve a copy. That Mignola cover will move fast y'all. From the publisher Building on the success of the critically acclaimed and bestselling Space Ghost series, Dynamite Entertainment is proud to bring another beloved Hanna-Barbera classic to readers this February - The Herculoids! Hidden in the furthest reaches of space, the planet of Amzot is legendary for its fabled riches - and for the terrible fates that befall anybody who seeks to exploit them... Those who survive their encounters tell blood-chilling tales of horrific, imposing monsters that guard the mysterious world - yet the lure of its abundant resources is too great to resist. Raiders and pirates continue to come from across the galaxy, and there is only one force strong enough to stop their constant attacks - The Herculoids! But as strong as these defenders are, a recent battle may have pushed Amzot to its limits - and awakened a sleeping darkness within the planet itself! Written by TOM SNIEGOSKI (Vampirella, Hellboy) and drawn by CRAIG ROUSSEAU (Batman Beyond, Gotham Adventures), The Herculoids #1 features a wealth of covers from some of the galaxy's most talented artists, including FRANCESCO MATTINA, JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER, BJORN BARENDS, FELIPE MASSAFERA, and the legendary creator of Hellboy, MIKE MIGNOLA! • Joe Caramagna Interview - Space Chasers
    Jan 28 2025
It feels like this interview has been a long time coming. Anyone that has been following the Comic Book Yeti crew the past few years knows that Jimmy always tries to shine a light on letterers, so finally letterer and writer Joe Caramagna joins Jimmy to talk a little about his career in comics. Joe and Jimmy also talk about Joe teaming up with astronaut Leland Melvin to write Space Chasers, a middle-grade graphic novel about Tia Valor and a diverse ensemble of kids training to launch to an advanced space station. Listeners might remember Leland Melvin as the astronaut who included his dogs in his NASA photo. Joe talks about collaborating with Leland Melvin on the series (this is the first volume), what Joe learned while working on the series, the things that were important to Joe to include, why he would never want to travel to space, and how his daughter wants to be an astronaut. Plus since Jimmy knows Joe loves donuts he invites Joe to Delaware to treat him to Sleeping Bird Doughnuts. From the publisher: When Tia Valor takes a test on a whim for an exclusive NASA program for middle schoolers, she never thought she'd pass. After all, she never really fit in at school. In fact, she's been skipping school most days to work at her brother's auto shop instead. But Leland Melvin, a famed astronaut, sees potential in Tia, and before she knows it, she's part of a team of other talented kids training to launch to an advanced space station orbiting the earth. But the perils of space are unpredictable and Tia finds herself with only half her crew and no adults around to help. Now she must rely on her instincts and the quick thinking of her fellow kid astronauts to save the space station and their lives! Created by real-life astronaut Leland Melvin, Eisner-Award nominated comic creator Joe Caramagna, and brought to brilliant life by Alison Acton, Space Chasers is a space adventure like no other. • Joey Esposito and Sean Von Gorman Interview - The Pedestrian
    Jan 24 2025
The Pedestrian is one of those gems of a comic book you find, increasingly rare for someone who works covering the industry, so I was excited to finally catch up with co-creators Joey Esposito and Sean Von Gorman. It was my favorite new series of 2024 and Jimmy was kind enough to get me a signed copy when we visited Baltimore Comic Con last fall. Nearly everyone I know was impacted by the passing of artistic legend David Lynch and the boys get into how Lynch inspired the project, delve into superhero mythologies, and the challenges and joys of developing a unique superhero who is nonverbal. We also get into some of the project's themes and share a few stories about growing up in small towns and how that experience laid the foundation for the characters to explore in their world. From the publisher Behold, The Pedestrian! A strange visitor speedwalks into Summer City and silently changes the lives of its residents. But not all is quiet in this sleepy, small town—an ancient conflict linked to the secret history of street signs is brewing! DON’T WALK... RUN! In The Pedestrian, justice always has the right of way! The collected trade hits shelves on February 11th. Don't miss what is for me the standout unique comic book of 2024. PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. • Olivia Cuartero Briggs Interview- Kill Train
    Jan 21 2025
It didn't take too long into 2025 before Jimmy had to have a Mad Cave creator on the podcast. Olivia Cuartero-Briggs is an award-winning dramatic writer, girl mom and fitness junky, currently enjoying a career writing for film, TV, comics, and novels in sunny Los Angeles. Olivia joins Jimmy to talk about her new series Kill Train with artist Martina Niosi. They talk about the creation of the series, the trickiness that sometimes comes with scripting a first issue, and hint at some of the carnage to come in future issues. Jimmy loved issue 1. You can hear why in the episode and find out for yourself when the issue hits your LCS on January 29th. From Mad Cave Studios: To control the population explosion that nearly crippled the city, New York has instituted Kill Train, a randomized, extermination program where designated subway trains are picked at random, and all the passengers are slaughtered by the end of the line. In this not-so-distant future, we meet Vanessa, a struggling single mom in the midst of a nervous breakdown, who discovers that she, herself, is on a Kill Train. Now, for once in her life and with everything to prove, Vanessa decides she's not going down without a fight. • Oliver Bly Interview - The Mushroom Knight Vol 2
    Jan 17 2025
On today's show I have returning guest and recent Russ Manning Award Winner Oliver Bly sitting down to talk about the second volume of his original graphic novel series The Mushroom Knight from Mad Cave Studios. We a shared love of mycology so I have always adored this project and we go deep into exploring the themes of ecology and spirituality and how they mesh throughout the books. Oliver shares insights into his creative process, the significance of character designs, and how the overarching message centers around universal biological connectivity and highlighting the dangers of invasive species in our ecosystems. It's really interesting to hear his visual approach to using body language to act with a character who's mouth doesn't move (does he really even have a mouth?) We also get into the role of enlisting a sensitivity reader on the project. If you enjoyed this chat, you can click the link here to go back and catch up our first conversation about Volume 1. The Mushroom Knight Volume 2 From the publisher An adolescent girl named Lem searches the deep dark woods for her missing dog, entangling her destiny with a chivalrous mushroom faerie named Gowlitrot on a mystical quest to protect the biome from catastrophic ruin. As their friendship develops, Gowlitrot pledges to aid Lem in a quest to discover the fate of her missing dog, but as the search progresses, they uncover perilous betrayals that challenge the foundation of each of their worlds— both inner and outer. • Ian Mondrick Interview - Mongoose: The Unconventional Art of Joseph Mondrick
    Jan 15 2025
I'm biased, of course, but this is a fantastic episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner as Jimmy welcomes Ian Mondrick to the podcast. Ian is the writer and co-creator of one of the Yeti's favorites, the Tomb series: Tomb of the White Horse, Tomb of the Red Horse, and Tomb of the Black Horse. Ian comes on the podcast though to discuss Mongoose: The Unconventional Art of Joseph Mondrick. It's 150 pages of unconventional black & white art created by Ian's father over decades that has been put together by Ian and designed by Jeremy Heiman. Ian's father passed away in 2020, but he left behind decades of illustrations. Ian shares stories about his father, their relationship, and what his father taught him about being creative. This is a wonderful conversation that covers comics, art, movies, and, of course, dads. The Mongoose campaign will be live on Kickstarter until January 27th. You can back the book here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ianmondrick/mongoose-150-pages-of-unconventional-black-and-white-art From Ian and the Kickstarter campaign: MONGOOSE: THE UNCONVENTIONAL ART OF JOSEPH MONDRICK is a book incredibly close to my heart. After losing my father to MS in March of 2020, I began scanning his decades of artwork to preserve it at my mother’s request. That snowballed into the book we’ve already compiled, designed, and test-printed. Bringing it into existence was a victory in itself, but we’d like to see if we can share his talent with a larger audience, hence the upcoming campaign.
