So what does the Bible teach about divorce and remarriage? God established marriage as a lifelong commitment. Marriages are not meant to fail, but there are some situations when the Bible allows for divorce and remarriage. In this sermon, Pastor David explains God’s plan from the very beginning was lifelong monogamous marriage between one man and woman with no divorce, but because of sin God has made exceptions to this rule.

Matthew 5:31–32 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

Matthew 19:3–12 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” 7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” 10 The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”

Jesus address the seriousness of sexual sin and said that even lustful looks deserve the fires of hell. In this sermon, Pastor David explains how to fight for sexual purity and avoid lustful desires while looking to the Savior who rescues and purifies even those stained by sexual sin.

Matthew 5:27–30 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into Hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into Hell.

The Law of Christ begins at the heart of anger. It's not enough to refrain from killing, Christians must refrain from angry thoughts. In this sermon, Pastor David explains that the Gospel frees Christians to love rather than hate.

Matthew 5:21–26 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Do Christians just pick and choose to obey some of the Bible’s laws while ignoring others? The answer is no, that’s not what Christians do. In this sermon, Pastor David explains how Christians determine what laws apply to us today and why are Old Testament commands no longer binding.

How should Christians relate to the unbelieving world around us? The answer that Jesus gives is that we are to be like salt and light. In this sermon, Pastor David explains that in word and deed we are to help preserve the earth from spiritual and moral decay and we are to shine the light of the Gospel into the world of darkness.

The Sermon on the Mount begins with a list of blessings. It is a description of the truly converted. It's what it looks like to really be one of God's people. This is Christ’s own description of what it looks like to follow Him. The list is often referred to as the beatitudes. The first four beatitudes address our need before God, the final four beatitudes call us to action. It’s the duties of the Christian. The second half of each of these statements reveals the Christian's hope.

The most well-known words of the world’s greatest teacher are written in Matthews 5-7.

It’s often called the Sermon on the Mount and it’s the manifesto of Jesus Christ. It’s history’s most famous speech and although it was given 2000 years ago, these profound words are still shockingly relevant to our lives today. In this sermon, Jesus is telling us what it looks like for believers to live in the kingdom.

Christ is coming back to accomplish two goals. For some, His Second Coming will be wonderful, but others will see it as terrible. In this sermon, Pastor David explains the twofold purpose of Christ’s glorious return. When Christ returns it will cause both celebration and devastation as He brings both wrath and rescue. When Christ comes back He will give vengeance to unbelievers and deliverance to believers.

When Jesus came the first time it was to be despised and rejected. When He comes a second time it will be to be glorified and admired. He came the first time to bear the penalty of sin as the Substitute. He will come a second time to bring the penalty of sin as the Judge.

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10 This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering6 since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you,7 and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus.9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might,10 when He comes on that Day to be glorified in His saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.
