• 7 Years 344 Episodes - Thank you and goodnight
    Feb 25 2025

After 7 Years and 344 Episodes it is time to say: Thank you and goodnight

Today - February 25th 2025 - marks the seventh anniversary since the first episode of this podcast went live to the world on February 25th 2018

When I first launched the podcast I was advised that the vast majority of new podcast launches don't make it beyond episode seven.

So to have reached 344 episodes in seven years of podcasting seems like a reasonable achievement.

It also feels like the perfect time to draw halt to the Better Presentations More Sales podcast

I started listening to podcasts around 2014 and I remember one of the shows I listened to was a social media marketing podcast hosted by Chris Marr up in Scotland.

On one of his episodes the guest was a chap called Pete Matthew who revealed that he was from Penzance in Cornwall.

Not too far from me in Truro and the first time I've heard anyone from Cornwall on a business podcast.

Pete revealed on the episode that he'd been podcasting himself for quite a number of years.

Knowing I needed some help to get started with podcasting I contacted Pete. He generously gave me his time back in the summer of 2016 and eventually after much procrastination I finally launched the podcast in February 2018.

Ironically Chris Marr would end up being a guest on my show in 2024.

The first 78 episodes were without guests before I worked out how to use Zoom and I interviewed Claire Boscq Scott from Jersey who I met sitting next to at a seminar at the London Business Show in 2019.

Juanita Wheeler from Australia was my final and 130th guest.

I do intend to return with a new podcast linked to presenting skills sometime maybe in the autumn but until then I'm very much focused on developing my on demand presentation and sales pitch training courses.

I would like to say a few thank you's to all the people who made this podcast run for as long as it did.

Firstly Pete Matthew who provided me with the knowledge and encouragement.

My daughter Beth who edited most of the first year or two episodes

Her friend Lauren who provided the voice introduction for the first batch of episodes

My son Jim who provided technical support when I first set up all the recording kit and his friend Robert who created the podcast logos

The 130 guests who have appeared on the show

It often felt like I was getting a one-to-one coaching masterclass so I'm very grateful for them sharing their insights, advice and expertise.

And finally you the listeners of the show

I can't believe it's been seven years - I’ve had a fantastic time and I will be back.

So until then enjoy presenting and speaking and remember don't put too many words on your slides

  • 5 Top Public Speaking Tips with Juanita Wheeler
    Feb 18 2025

Public Speaking is a key skill for entrepreneurs.

In this episode speaking and presenting specialist Juanita Wheeler shares 5 top public speaking tips

Juanita is the founder of Full & Frank and helps executives, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and changemakers to develop and deliver high impact presentations, worthy of their great ideas.

    Juanita’s five top tips include:

Don't speak unless you have decided what your strategic objective/outcome for your speaking or presenting opportunity is.

Prepare, prepare and prepare. If you don't prepare you are likely to be nervous and risk not being as good as you would hope to be. Take preparation seriously. Ted X speakers devote hours and hours of time to preparation and start five months before the day.

Memorising and rehearsing or not the same thing.

Nothing beats authenticity – when you deliver your presentation or pitch be your passionate and informed self.

Start! - so many would be presenters and speakers simply wait too long to get started thinking that they need to be almost perfect before they get going

You can find Juanita at https://fullandfrank.com which is where you can find Juanita’s free guides and sign up to her newsletter

  • Why Introverts make great Presenters with Stacey Chazin
    Jan 28 2025

People who regard themselves as introverts often think that presenting and speaking isn't for them.

So I'm delighted on this episode that founder of I-Factor Leadership Stacey Chazin talks about why introverts make great presenters

Stacey is a leadership coach who helps introverts embrace their strengths and step into leadership roles with confidence

In her view introverts can be the most powerful and impactful speakers.

Stacey herself is an introvert who believed she wasn't cut out for presenting and speaking.

To answer why introverts make great presenters, Stacey talks about the innate strengths of introverts including thoughtful preparation, deep listening, as well as being good storytellers and being potentially more comfortable in front of an audience than having to engage in small talk with one or two people.

Introverts by their very nature tend not to want to spotlight on themselves which means they are great at delivering presentations which focus on the audience and the audience needs rather than themselves and their own achievements

This episode goes a long way to dis-spell the myth that you need to be an extrovert to be a great speaker or presenter

Stacey’s two tips to help introverts start presenting:

    1. Start with a small audience - could be 3 or 4 colleagues
    2. Weave in a story you are very familiar with

Staceys mentions a conference survival guide for introverts: https://ifactorleadership.com/survivalguide

And a Meeting Playbook for Introverts: 10 Strategies to Have Your voice Heard and Your Ideas Shine: https://ifactorleadership.com/meetingplaybook/

  • Out of the Box Presenting Ideas with Angie Hyche
    Jan 21 2025

    Presentations can be very predictable

So I'm delighted to have on this week’s show Angie Hyche sharing out of the box presenting ideas

Ideas that will engage your audience and ensure that you are a memorable presenter or speaker

Angie is a certified professional organiser and has been a speaker for many years as well as being an author and a podcaster

We talk about out of the presenting ideas as well as how to declutter your presentation slides - imagine the impact both of these will have on your presentations

Using out of the box presenting ideas will stand you out for certain as a presenter and decluttering your slides will definitely stand you out against everybody else as they largely continue to want to cram tons of words and complex messages onto virtually every slide that they share

Angie describes how she has used as a prop a series of cardboard boxes and even a concrete block when she is talking about decluttering when speaking and presenting

Angie also shares some engaging techniques for when delivering virtual presentations

Angie’s two top tips for listeners:

Don’t be afraid to try something that can seem a little crazy - it will be memorable

    Declutter your slides!

You can find Angie at https://angiehyche.com

  • Transform your Presentation Design with Tim Jacques
    Jan 14 2025

Presentation design can make a huge difference to the success of your presentation.

I’m delighted therefore that on this episode I talk about how to transform your presentation design with freelance presentation designer Tim Jacques

Tim shares some great insights into how he goes about designing a presentation for his clients based on who they are and the brand message they want to get across as well as who the audience is and how they want to receive the presentation.

We also talk about the difference between presentation design for an in-person audience and presentation design for a virtual audience

There is no doubt that if you transform your presentation design there is every chance that you will get better results from your presentation.

Tim's two top tips that you can implement straightaway to help transform your presentation design are:

Simplify your presentation focusing on just one idea per slide and on that slide avoiding text overload

Secondly have a hierarchical structure to each slide to ensure you keep the attention of your audience on what you want them to be focusing on

You can find Tim at https://jqscreates.com

  • 3 Opportunities for Better Presentations
    Jan 7 2025

Here are three opportunities in 2025 where you can deliver better presentations and as a result potentially create more sales.

Firstly internal meetings whether that be to colleagues or management team

Secondly to clients where the key to a better presentation is to focus on the client from the get go not yourself and in both cases to use less words on your slides.

The third opportunity for a better presentation in 2025 is when you go out networking and you deliver your elevator pitch so instead of starting with the usual stuff about yourself, identify a problem that your audience can relate to and share how you can help solve it

All these opportunities potentially lead to more sales

If you think you might need some help with your next key presentation book a free 15 minute Zoom call with me and we can discuss your presentation and if I can help you.

If I can then the next step would be a 40-50 minute Zoom call where we will go through your presentation and I will be your audience, your challenger and your coach.
