  • Social Security Shake-Up: Chief Resigns Over Trump Administration’s Data Access Demands
    Feb 18 2025
The head of the Social Security Administration is out. Acting Commissioner Michelle King stepped down over the weekend, reportedly after refusing to grant the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access to sensitive Social Security recipient data. Sources say King’s decision to protect private taxpayer information clashed with the Trump administration’s push for expanded oversight. King, a 30-year veteran of the agency, is the latest high-ranking official to resign amid concerns over DOGE’s growing access to federal databases, including Treasury payment systems and IRS records. In her place, the White House has appointed Leland Dudek as acting commissioner until Trump’s nominee, Frank Bisignano, is confirmed. The administration insists its efforts are aimed at eliminating fraud, but with Social Security serving more than 72 million Americans, the key question remains: Why does Elon Musk’s DOGE need access to this level of personal data? • Bad News for U.S. Retail Sales
    Feb 18 2025
(AURN News) — More bad news for the U.S. economy. U.S. retail and food service sales fell 0.9% in January to $723.9 billion, according to recent data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. The monthly report, based on a survey of approximately 4,800 retail and food service firms, showed widespread declines across multiple sectors. Furniture and home furnishing stores, food and beverage establishments, and general merchandise stores all reported decreased sales. The January decline comes as economists await February's sales figures, scheduled for release on March 17, to determine if the downturn represents the beginning of a longer-term trend. • #OTD: Morehouse College Founded as Augusta Theological Institute in 1867
    Feb 18 2025
On February 18, 1867, just two years after the Civil War ended, Rev. William Jefferson White, a Baptist minister, founded the Augusta Theological Institute in the basement of Springfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia. The school’s mission was to educate young Black men for teaching and ministry. The institution relocated multiple times before settling in Atlanta’s West End in 1885, where it remains today as Morehouse College. In 1913, the school was renamed in honor of Henry L. Morehouse, a key figure in the Northern Baptist Home Mission Society. Under its first African American president, Dr. John Hope, Morehouse expanded its academic programs and attracted top scholars to its faculty. Today, Morehouse College stands as a beacon of excellence and leadership in Black higher education. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
