“If we have the courage and tenacity of our forebears, who stood firmly like a rock against the lash of slavery, we shall find a way to do for our day what they did for theirs" - Mary McLeod Bethune

The moment in which we find ourselves is not particularly easy. Many of us looking at our individual circumstances, the news, and the world around us have good reason to believe that things may very well get worse before they get better.

Nevertheless, we are not the first generation to face hardship and struggle. No matter who you are reading or listening to this, you likely have someone or a lot of someones on your tree who faced even worse.

Let us have the same tenacity, courage, and determination in facing today’s situation as they did facing yesterday’s. They had the hope and faith to believe that tomorrow could be better than today, but only if they committed to the work of making it so.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.

“So, we have known and believe the love God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.” - 1 John 4:16

  • The Power of God Lives Within

“The gospel of Jesus is not a rational concept to be explained in a theory of salvation, but a story about God’s presence in Jesus’ solidarity with the oppressed, which led to his death on the cross. What is redemptive is the faith that God snatches victory out of defeat, life out of death, and hope out of despair.” - James H. Cone

The Caesars of this world claim that they have received the favor of God. Some of them even claim to be God’s anointed. They rationalize the exploitative and unjust systems as ordained by God.

The story of Jesus on the cross rejects this self serving narrative. God shows up in the lives of the forsaken and marginalized. The powerful of the resurrection in our lives snatches victory from defeat.

“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.” (Romans 8:11)

That same power lives in us. Therefore we have hope.
