This gripping short story by Mary E.Wilkins Freeman involves 4 Glynn family siblings (Henry, rebecca, Caroline & Emma) who become terrified after the loss of one of their group (Edward) to death and strange shadows begin to appear on the wall of their home. It seems Henry had argued with Edward the night before Edward died. Now comes the first nightfall and none of them want to light athe candle in the house,afraid of what they may see. This story is considered one of the author's best for the way explores each of the sibling's personalities.

A 16th century romance which takes place in Verona Italyin a setting involving feuding families much like those in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Although this was written before 'The Gilded Age' it was still a popular read at that time, and one of the stories that lifted Mary shelley to classic fame.

An unknown narrator relates the story of a woman who lived alone in their town who dressed richly and acted differently, often attracting the attention of single men. False suspicions and dislike grew in her wake, and sensing this, the woman changed her ways, bought a house on a nice street and began attending church- but the community didn't change their attitudes or try to get to know her. Its a good morality tale, in that you shouldn't judge anyone by what others think and say, and think and find out for yourself. You may be surprised.

A fun story by Eliza Leslie describing a mom and her two grown kids- allvery educated and ready to take their place in society as was the goal in "the upper classes" of the late 19th century, They are traveling through New York and a friend has referred two familes to them to stop by and meet on their way home. They respond to both families and receive word back that yes, both families were looking forward to meting them and they are invited to visit the same evening. The accept the first invitation, which is not that descriptive, only to discover soon after accepting the first that the second invitation offers a much fancier evening with much more to do, entertainment,and the like. But as the agreed to the first, thats where they go. And what an evening!

A 40 year old man returns to his hometown after a 15 year absence hoping to find some romance in his life and finds that not all that much has changed. His hopes aren't that high, considering he never made the fortune he had left to find, but his luck might be about to change.
