Lauren Beukes' tale of a young woman trapped in a brutal city but looking for a way out....
Zinzi has a Sloth on her back, a dirty 419 scam habit and a talent for finding lost things. But when a little old lady turns up dead and the cops confiscate her last paycheque, she's forced to take on her least favourite kind of job - missing persons.
Being hired by reclusive music producer Odi Huron to find a pop star should be her ticket out of Zoo City, the festering slum where the criminal underclass and their animal companions reside.
Instead it catapults Zinzi deeper into the maw of a city twisted by crime and magic, where she'll be forced to confront the dark secrets of former lives - including her own.

Uniquely South African Fantasy Novel - Love it!
This is my first Lauren Beukes book I’ve listened to. It was quite refreshing to read this genre of story situated in South Africa. It re-framed the narrative and opened up new avenues to explore, which Lauren Beukes did masterfully. It’s both a detective and fantasy story and although I’m generally less of a fan of detective stories, it kept my interests peaked as we dove deeper and deeper into the world of Zoo City. The world is so rich that it warrants a sequel and I hope Lauren does consider this. As a VFX supervisor in film, the rich colourful world of Zoo City is just waiting to be visualized! Highly recommend this book.
