About this listen

Are you comfortable starting a conversation with strangers at a party? Do you sometimes feel ineffective in making your needs clear? Do you have difficulty saying no to persuasive people?

Everyone needs a little help getting along with others. Assertiveness is a key social skill, as well as a tool for making your relationships more equal. Learning to respond more effectively to others can help you reduce stress and increase your sense of self-worth.

In this fully updated and revised 10th edition, you'll learn practical advice on dealing with difficult people, handling criticism, and expressing your feelings. You'll also discover how to use humor in conflict resolution, ways to clarify others' intentions, and how to distinguish between encouraging and discouraging communication habits. This edition also includes a new introduction by coauthor Robert Alberti, in addition to research and information on the subjects of anger and interpersonal communication.

Assertiveness is an alternative to personal powerlessness or manipulation. The program in this book will help you develop effective ways to express yourself, maintain your self-respect, and show respect for others. This is not a "me-first" book-it's all about equal-relationship assertiveness!

Great Information to Practice

Was informative, great work. Throughout the book there was offerings of other suggested books, sure wished at the end of the book they would have been reoffered so I could have noted a few of them.

Time to self reflect and change

A therapist friend recommended this book to me. I had the basics of sharing my positive or negative feelings with people. But this book sheds light on when to do it and when not to do it. To become assertive on this process and pursue equality on all types of relationships.

Ugh. Came highly recommended, but too dated.

There may well be some great messages in this book. but the tone and examples were so dated as to be offensive to me. I was assigned this book, but flatly refused to go on reading after just one chapter or so

Newer Isn’t Always Better

This review is specifically for the 10th edition issued in March 2020. One can only hope the previous additions were better.

There are so many things wrong with this book. It was a huge disappointment, especially because it came highly recommended.

You have to crawl through 4 boring chapters lecturing you on the world at large before you even get to anything directly relevant to being assertive. And then the examples that he uses are so made up and unrealistic that it’s not useful.

In addition he is repetitive AND finds a way to contradict himself.

For the audiobook, the narration is stiff and uninspiring.

I cannot recommend this edition of the book.
