About this listen
Would you like to know how to complete a marathon?
To many people, having the desire to run a marathon is a mystery. But to others, it's one of the most natural activities in world. Running is one of the easiest sports to fit into a busy lifestyle. It doesn't cost you anything; you can do it anywhere and at any time. Most people will take up running to get fit or to lose weight initially. Once you get into it, and you've benefited from losing weight and getting fitter, you start to crave the desire of another challenge. "How far can you run?" or "How fast can you run?"
Whatever the initial motivation, the desire to test your limits is usually the driving force for people wanting to run a marathon.
Running a marathon is an epic challenge. On completion, you'll be part of a club with less than 1% of the world's population. When people think about running a marathon, the idea becomes scary and overwhelming. That's normal! This book is designed to take a complete beginner through the process of running a marathon from start to finish.
Here's a preview of what you'll learn:
- How to get started on your marathon journey
- Selecting the right training program
- A training plan to get you to the finish
- A sub-four hour training plan
- Running workouts
- Mental training tips
- Running gear
- Marathon nutrition and hydration basics

Story
Long distance running is much like any other fitness training. If you want to improve, you need a good plan that has a progressive nature. If you are new to this game, you need a solid foundation to build on. Having a running program is not the only thing that you need. Sound advice and running tips should be taken from someone who has "walked the walk", or in this case, "ran the run".

When you sign up for a class, you get a syllabus (training plan), you do your homework (training runs), and then you take your final (run the marathon), right? Training for a marathon is as methodical as taking a class. You just have to add heart!

Story
Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive method - run as hard as possible, for fear of losing - fostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinking - shaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilient - could make her faster than she’d ever imagined possible.

Every marathon runner’s journey is different. You might have caught the bug after experiencing that adrenaline rush of completing your first 5k; it might be a desire to finally cross something off your bucket list; or, perhaps it was a bit of an absentminded afterthought while watching TV, crisps in hand, and a niggling voice saying ‘maybe I could do that’–it was for Vassos, at least. However far along you are in your journey, How to Run A Marathon shows us that absolutely anyone can take those first steps to defeating the distance.

Story
As recently as 1966, women were forbidden to run in the marathon. Professionals - including doctors - believed it was physically impossible and dangerous for women to run more than a mile and a half. But as with many other barriers women have faced over time, we fought our way in. Today, women make up almost half of the marathoning population. Yet most marathon training manuals are written by men. And while these men are experts when it comes to how men can and should train, women need training programs tailored to our bodies....

Forget what you might have been told; triathlon running is not like typical running. The triathlon run comes after a swim and a bike. The training, pacing, and technique requirements are very different from regular running. But this isn’t what triathletes have been told. Fortunately, with the right kind of run training, the triathlon run doesn’t have to be a long, painful slog with a stumble to the finish. Triathlon Running Foundations provides the specific information athletes need in order to feel strong for every step of the run, all the way to the finish.

Short, not a lot of substance
Maybe it's because I am constantly looking for info regarding running--but I've heard all of this before. They basically explain a training program, which I have been doing for half marathons. It could be called "you're first race."
Not terrible, but it was not anything new for me.

Generic instructions
The book is a good read and mainly has the Do's and Don'ts in preparation for a Marathon. It does cover all areas needed to finish a marathon up to 26 miles.
But, when I wonder .. I couldn't think of any other way an author could have suggested better. It would have been more helpful if there was more focus on the nutrition aspect of the preparation.
Narrator was a bit fast paced for me. I had to read it at 0.80x speed.

Outdated thinking?
Author focuses on what seem to me to be outdated ideas of carb-loading, intensity runs, and high-tech footware. I personally find "primal endurance" thinking much more compelling.
