About this listen

A comically unorthodox “biography”

Spanning from the birth of Ulysses S. Grant until his victory over the Confederacy, You, Me, and Ulysses S. Grant gives us an honest portrait of an American hero who struggled to balance love, soldiering, and the attainment of the American Dream.

Taking the accessible, pop history of Coe’s You Never Forget Your First and adding more of the nerdy, punk humor of Rainn Wilson or Judd Apatow, You, Me, and Ulysses S. Grant is for both history and humor audiences alike. Examining the validity of biography by hilariously breaking all the form's rules, this book removes the pomp to deliver a hopeful message of human potential: that the heroes we now venerate were also flawed, flesh and blood individuals and that we, too, are never too small to achieve great things. In bringing Grant to life, Brad Neely may have created his greatest cult classic yet.

If you like Neely and American history you might love it

If you like American history, have an open mind, but are unfamiliar with Neely your mileage may vary

I was fully expecting a Neely voice, perhaps one of the professor brothers (and at times the voice he uses seems like it slips into Frank) but it took me a minute to get into the rickety old historian thing he was doing.

Almost Peak Neely

this was a profound rivulet of experience excreted from one of the hardest working joy glands in the game. From the moment it opened its delightful orafice encrusted with lemon-lime colored pus, I was enthralled. transcendent translucent, truckluent. a revelation onto man

After enjoying Wizard People for many years I was excited to hear about Brad Neely’s latest book about Ulysses S. Grant. Jokes aside and voice aside, Neely invites you into this world with more character, more environment and more heart. It is certainly funny, and also hugely beautiful.

Brad Neely is an artist

20 years ago, Brad Neely unleashed upon the Earth a masterpiece of comedy, storytelling, philosophy and silliness that was "Wizard People, Dear Reader". Since then, I have longed for more similar content but nothing has scratched the itch like this book. Fans of "China, Il", "Harg Nalling", "Professor Bros", etc. may be befuddled by the narrator's voice but the hilarity and unexpected insightfulness is one and the same. I can't recommend this book to everyone, it would cause my grandmother to termor anxiously in her bloomers, but those familar with any of Brad Neely's work will find this is yet another link in his unbroken chain of comedic brilliance. My only complaint is that it has an ending.

A must read for fans of Grant and Neely alike

This is the Brad Neely work we have all been waiting for. Laugh-out-loud funny and over ten hours, this makes Wizard People look like a warm-up. Taps into deeper truths than drier, non-farcical biographies.

Hilarious

I would pay 500 dollars for a copy of a Brad Neely book written in the same voice about Ken Griffey Jr.

I am awash in Grant
