About this listen
Are you feeling a little lost? Amidst the landscape of the global COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of us are feeling more uncertain than ever about our future, especially when it comes to our careers.
Many of us have had a sample of working from home for the first time and realized simultaneously that there is so much more out there and that we’re horribly unprepared for those next steps. Technology has developed so that it’s possible to work from literally anywhere, at any time. But are you ready for that?
Author Kristine Hudson (How to Choose the Ultimate Side-Hustle: Making Money and Being Your Own Boss, How to Live the Dream: Things Every Van Lifer Needs to Know) understands the feelings of uncertainty and under-preparedness that come with leaving the traditional office building behind. In her most personal book to date, she shares the steps she and her husband Brad took when they left the office behind for personal freedom. The honest anecdotes and exercises that come from a place of experience, you’ll learn more about the “whys, wheres, and hows” of working from anywhere you’d like to be.
Though Ms. Hudson is an experienced van lifer, the tips shared in this book are designed for anyone who has dreamed of working remotely.
In Working Where Your Heart Is: Finding Success Outside the Traditional Office, you’ll learn:
- How to gauge your readiness for working from home or the road
- The steps to setting up your personal workspace
- Engaging in higher levels of productivity beyond the cubicle walls
- Maintaining expectations and deadlines from any location you can imagine
- Balancing work and life from your home office or your 1985 Vanagon
If you’ve ever dreamed of never working from an office again...
If you crave control over your own day...
If you’re currently living the #vanlife and need to know what to do when the money starts to run out...
Working Where Your Heart Is: Finding Success Outside the Traditional Office is a “must-listen” to get you to the next step in your working life.
This book provides tips and exercises for anyone who has considered leaving the nine-to-five office-based workday behind. From determining why you want to make this change, to figuring out how to set up your workspace beyond cubicle walls, you’ll find more information in Working Where Your Heart Is: Finding Success Outside the Traditional Office, the third publication from author Kristine Hudson.

Story
Making giant lifestyle changes is difficult. Author Kristine Hudson has more than a fleeting knowledge of this truth, having left her stable, comfortable nine-five suburban life behind to live in a van as a freelance writer. In fact, as she demonstrates in her books, the next worst thing to being completely unprepared is being partially prepared! Combining Ms. Hudson’s works, You Can Absolutely Do This ties together her narrative of a first time van lifer, a first time side hustler, and a first time work-from-home entrepreneur, all rolled into one.

Does working from home—or anywhere else but the office—make sense? In Remote, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, the founders of Basecamp, bring new insight to the hotly debated argument. While providing a complete overview of remote work’s challenges, Jason and David persuasively argue that, often, the advantages of working “off-site” far outweigh the drawbacks.

A Great Help
Recommended to me by my friend. Honestly wasn’t sure what to think about it before starting. I don’t usually listen to audiobooks since it’s hard for me to focus, but this book proved me wrong. Before I knew it, I’d already listened to the entire thing. I liked how it felt like I was having a conversation with the author and not being lectured at. I’ve been having some trouble figuring myself out lately with what I want to do with myself, and now I feel a little more comfortable. There are a lot more freelance options than I thought. Before, I only heard of writers getting into it, but now I know there are even more positions and fields that I could work remotely in. Sometimes, you just have to ask if it’s possible. I’ll definitely be taking some of the advice from this book with me. A lot to think about…

Great book!
I was pleasantly surprised by the information in this book. It prepared me for the negative sides of working from home so I was prepared. Luckily the downsides aren’t big issues and the positives out way the negatives. I wouldn’t have made the move to remote working without this book.

Really Informative!
I really enjoyed listening to this book! As someone potentially interested in pursuing remote work after college, it was an enriching opportunity to hear about the author’s own personal experiences. From start to finish, I felt supported; just the right amount of advice was given to guide me through the process while also leaving the major decisions and points to think over up to me. I appreciated the mix of van life with working remotely as a whole; having both topics covered in detail allowed me to still feel like I was getting something out of the book even with my lack of interest in van life as a means of living.
To me, the book was just the right length! I didn’t feel like I was getting flooded with too much unnecessary information, and at the same time, enough was spent on each section that I felt like all the main topics were adequately covered. It was nice to have this on in the background as I worked on other things, and since the author writes in a more conversational tone, I was able to keep up without missing out on important bits of information or getting lost in technical terms. The personal stories kept me entertained, and they also helped to make the advice feel grounded in reality; because they were experiences coming from a real-life person—the person who wrote the book, no less—the messages being delivered felt genuine.
Overall, this audiobook is definitely worth looking into if you’re interested in working remotely, no matter where you plan on doing this work from!

Great Narration
The information provided by this book was great, and the narrator was easy to listen to. The narrator went at a nice pace and kept my interest the entire time. I have been working home since the beginning of the pandemic, and most of the topics that were touched on were things I wish I knew before I started working from home. I'm more of a people person and did not start out with an organized setup, which is why I wish I had a guide like this before.

Informative
I think the setup you have when working from home is the most important thing when making the transition, so I appreciate that there is an entire chapter dedicated to this. I believe that how your home office is set up, and where it is set up, determines how productive you are. Overall, this book is informative and gives a good look into what to expect when you begin working from home.

The Future of Working
Overall, this book is great! Kristine has captured the problems of the traditional work setting and what the future could look like! She is 100% correct that the future lies outside the traditional form of a 9-5 job sitting in a single place for the entire day. People are looking for more fulfilling work and things that bring them joy. It communicates the space between what we've established as the status quo and how it's outdated. Kristine shows us a way forward and it's up to us to listen! Great job!

The modern-day workplace
The modern-day workplace is no longer in the 9-5 office... in this day and age, especially post-COVID, we're all finding new and innovative ways to find success outside of the traditional 9-5 office. Now, working from home on your own hours is becoming a possibility more than ever. I absolutely loved the take on this topic and the encouragement it builds to take your business into your own hands and break the traditional habits, because they ARE changing. I deeply connected with the portion about a typical 9-5 being mentally and physically exhausting. Those kinds of jobs ate away at my mental health - I've personally never been happier working from home on my own terms. Great listen and read!
