About this listen
Shirley Jackson meets The Shining in this richly atmospheric and thrillingly tense novel from the acclaimed author of the "deliciously creepy" Baby Teeth (New York Post).
One mother's love may be all that stands between her family, an enigmatic presence — and madness.
After years of city life, Orla and Shaw Bennett are ready for the quiet of New York's Adirondack mountains — or at least, they think they are. Settling into the perfect farmhouse with their two children, they are both charmed and unsettled by the expanse of their land, the privacy of their individual bedrooms, and the isolation of life a mile from any neighbor.
But none of the Bennetts could expect what lies waiting in the woods, where secrets run dark and deep. When something begins to call to the family — from under the earth, beneath the trees, and within their minds — Orla realizes she might be the only one who can save them...if she can find out what this force wants before it's too late.
With an ending inescapable and deeply satisfying, Wonderland brilliantly blends horror and suspense to probe the boundaries of family, loyalty, love, and the natural world.

Story
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile - always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it's attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet - and inspired more than one copycat.

When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Story
A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: Something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waiting.... Now a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Otherwise, they’ll end up like the monsters’ other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

In 1959, her grandmother’s entire family disappeared in this mysterious tragedy, and ever since, the unanswered questions surrounding the only two people who were left - a woman stoned to death in the town center and an abandoned newborn - have plagued her. She’s gathered a small crew of friends in the remote village to make a film about what really happened.

Who are the Sawkill Girls? Marion: The newbie. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Zoey: The pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Val: The queen bee. Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Story
It’s Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts, and two families are unraveling. Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Children in vintage costumes with faded, eerie makeup. They seem terrified, and beg the neighborhood kids to hide them away, to keep them safe from The Cunning Man.

Critic reviews
"Zoje Stage's Wonderland is a mesmerizing journey into the darkest realms of the supernatural; a family, escaping the perils of city life, discovers that the splendors of nature can mask a hidden face of savage, unnameable terror." (Kathleen Kent, author of The Burn)
"Memorable imagery.... Stage's darkly lyrical writing style shines." (Publishers Weekly)
"Oh, fright fans rejoice. That sure hand you're looking for? That relentless climb, that crescendo of cold sweat? It's all here. Deep in the woods, under a lot of snow, steeped in mad, unfamiliar nature. Zoje Stage is in total control of your nightmare. For those who live to be scared, Wonderland is the book you'll be glad you cracked open at home, alone, at night." (Josh Malerman, New York Times best-selling author of Bird Box and Malorie)

Not awful
Interesting idea, but it just dragged after a while. I also am not a fan of the narrator. I hate adults pretending to be children unless they can do it well. She also was very... I’m not sure of the word... her voice just seemed to pull every character down. I’d like her in a book with older characters but she just didn’t fit.

As advertised...Horror Psychological Supernatural
I really enjoyed the story. Takes place in a decollate cold place and I think the narrators performance perfectly captures that feeling and transfers the tone of the story to the listener. I love a good supernatural mystery and this kept me wanting to come back. It does start a little dreary, but I think that sets you up for the isolation of the main character and helps you feel what she would be feeling. Great story and performance! I immediately looked to see if there was a sequel, I'd love to know what happens next!

First half of the book I was certain she had ripped off The Shining. Second half dragged on forever and became repetitive. The ending was utterly unsatisfying. That’s 10 hours of my life I won’t get back.

Engrossing and original story, well read
This isn't exactly what I was expecting from a few short reviews I read. I was looking for a horror story. and found this on some short lists, but I would call it a fantasy with some horror elements. None of that is the story's fault, of course, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I might have. The story is very good, well written, I liked the characters a lot, and the premise felt very unique and original. I've seen a lot of praise for this author, and their other book "Baby Teeth", which is supposed to be very creepy. Overall, I liked it, even if it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

So many negative reviews for this book make me sad. There were some plot holes and yes the characters acted a bit helpless and illogical, but it was an exciting and spooky story which is what I signed up for. I was well entertained and enjoyed listening.

Interesting concept
I related to this book more than enjoyed it. I could understand the anguish and second-guessing of the main character Orla. I also understood the isolation of living in rural NY as that is where I am from. There was just a lot of slow times and some of the overall themes did not make a whole lot of sense. I am not disappointed but I do like a little more adventure.
