About this listen

His plan was to stay in Iowa, maybe get a job counting ducks or do a little farming. But events conspired to fling Carter Niemeyer westward and straight into the jaws of wolves. From his early years wrangling ornery federal trappers, eagles, and grizzlies, to winning a skinning contest that paved the way for wolf reintroduction in the Northern Rockies, Niemeyer reveals the wild and bumpy ride that turned a trapper - a killer - into a champion of wolves.

Introduction by Nicholas Evans, author of The Horse Whisperer.

Nuanced perspective on wolf reintroduction

Carter Niemeyer’s fascinating and knowledgeable story of his journey from predator killer to key roles in wolf reintroduction presents an even-handed view of the concerns of all stakeholders — like Carter’s own dealings with them. His work to educate government agencies, ranchers, legislators, activists, and anyone else about wolves who would listen is amazing and a great listen. It’s the story of a man who reluctantly grew to respect the animals whose lives he guarded and sometimes ultimately was forced to take. I came away with a greatly increased understanding of the challenges of wildlife work, predator control, and the intertwined lives of wolves and the ranchers and public servants whose land they roam.

For lovers of wildlife and wolves in particular, this memoir by Carter Niemeyer provides a window into the complex arena of predator control for the preservation of domestic livestock. It is a messy business and Carter knows it better than anyone around. He writes with an informal entertaining style. You won’t sorry that you rode along in his pickup.

Recommend 4 anyone involved in wildlife advocacy

This book and historical account was even better than I thought it would be. Although autobiographical, it often reads more like an interesting novel, told with humor and humility. In his earlier years, the author is from a hunter trapper family background, and seems unlikely to become a wolf and wildlife. advocate. But this eventually helps him to become a wildlife expert, who truly seems to understand both sides of the struggle between pro-wolf and anti-wolf advocates. As a wildlife professional, he learns to navigate between these very different worlds and the politics involved, while remaining true to himself. Highly recommend, especially for those struggling to understand both sides of the complications involved in reintroduction of wolves in North America.
