About this listen

Kelvin Wiltshire lives the life of a simple cook in a remote village on the far side of Trendham.

The townsfolk think little of the man and his son and believe him to be just another refugee from the Terabinian war. On cold winter nights, they share rumors of the bloody conflict and the mysterious death of Will Cartwright, the mighty mage who had the power to command storms.

They like the new cook. They fear the fallen king. But the two men are one and the same.

Haunted by nightmares from his past, Will has chosen a life of exile, hoping to erase the blood from his soul by forging a simple life. Service and family might ease his pain, but beneath his scars are deeper wounds: a queen and wife turned into a lich, friends poisoned with hate. While he seeks peace in isolation, his absence has left a void, and an ancient foe craves a return to power.

Patient and malevolent, the enemy knows the nature of man, and anger is an oh-so-useful tool in the game of nations. As war looms, Will’s anonymity—and the life he’s built—are threatened, forcing him to choose between the friends of his past and the friends of his present. To win, he’ll need what he left behind: the mantle of the Stormking.

Critic reviews

"In a realm meticulously populated with trolls, elves, dragons, and mages, Reynolds is at his best giving lively voices to nosy aunts, curious cousins, and a brother-in-law with a heart of gold." —AudioFile Magazine

Slow but good recovery and setup

I originally disliked “The Wizard’s Crown” (in fact I didn’t finish it). However after I read this book I went back and finished it. While neither book is ideal, together they have created a great setup for future books.

Far better than the last

I thought the world was over after the end of "Art of the Adept", and I like many felt that it was a bad ending. This book was far superior to the last, the story is was lighter then pervious books in a good way. It finished in a way that had me wanting the next book and that is always a good thing. The only thing I didn't care for at all was Oliver (Wills son) his entire character was poorly written and I was outright hoping he wouldn't make it.

Redemption

I was, like many others was disappointed with the 5th book of the art of the adept I thought it was the end. So imagine my surprise when I seen this book admittedly I was reluctant in getting this book but being attached to the world and characters within I gave it a 2nd chance. I personally was not disappointed. The pacing is a bit slow but other than that fans of the last series rejoice for this book is a must read.

Another great one

The story was fantastic and Reynolds is by far one of the best in the Audiobook biz. Can’t wait for the next book.

Great book

Excellent and filled with twists and turns. Every time you start to think you know what is going to happen, you don’t. However, it wasn’t overdone. In keeping with the characters and who they are!
