About this listen

In her first work of contemporary women's fiction, bestselling author Kay Bratt draws on her own life experiences to create a raw, yet inescapably warm, novel about friendship and a wary heart's unexpected capacity to love.

A hungry, stray dog is the last thing Cara Butter needs. Stranded in Georgia with only her backpack and a few dwindling dollars, she already has too much baggage. Like her twin sister, Hana, who has broken Cara's heart one too many times. After a lifetime of family troubles, and bouncing from one foster home to another, Cara decides to leave it all behind and strike out alone - on foot.

Cara sets off to Florida to see the home of her literary hero, Ernest Hemingway, accompanied only by Hemi, the stray dog who proves to be the perfect travel companion. But the harrowing trip takes unexpected turns as strangers become friends who make her question everything, and Cara finds that as the journey unfolds, so does her life - in ways she could never imagine.

An interesting book. most notable is that I learned a few things about relationships, the importance of discussing feelings, and how meaningful it can be in someone else's life, including a stranger's, if we help them in any way at all, big or small. Numerous people in this book took the time and trouble to help a stranger. Those who helped didn't really ever know how important what they had done was. It's a well written and purposeful book.

A meaningful and enjoyable story.

Kay Bratt did it again. She captured me, moved me to tears, and changed the way I look at things in the world. Every book I have listened to by Bratt seems to heal a wound inside of me that I never knew was there. Kate Rudd has again brought to life the characters and captivated me. Excellently written and excellently delivered.

Another great one!

A suspenseful, realistic, & heart wrenching look at the journey two twins made through the Child welfare system. Prepare for surprises along the way as things aren’t always as they seem.
The narrator does a wonderful job infusing the story with the appropriate emotions.

Hang on as twin sisters attempt to pick up their lives.

This is a hard luck story in which the main character is treated to numerous acts of kindness by strangers. It is truly redeeming as a story of what the best of us could be. The thing is there are so many amazing acts condensed into such a short period of time that it becomes pretty unbelievable. However it’s beautiful story, well written and well performed. Heavy on Pollyanna And having faith in our fellow human beings. I’d listen to it again just to remind me of what our too-often crass and callous society could be.

I enjoyed this story. I could feel as if was traveling with Cara as she made her way through the cities and towns on her way to her destination. Cara on her journey, must make her way through her past struggles and forge a new life. I appreciate the author's ability to deal with sensitive or difficult subjects in a serious but not too heavy of a way. Ultimately showing both love and strength and the bond of family help get us through.

Enjoyable read
