About this listen

Delivering babies is not in my standard contract, says Kai Cooke to his very pregnant client, Summer McDahl. Summer has hired the Surfing Detective with an unusual request: to prove her husband is dead.

Corky McDahl wiped out on Christmas Eve in heavy surf at Waimea Bay and vanished. Now it's February, Summer's baby is soon due, and the P.I. finds himself on a twisted treasure hunt spanning three Hawaiian islands.

Did Corky pull off the most daring skip-trace ever?

The answer turns out to be more complicated than the question would suggest, involving the islands’ big-wave riding and drug trafficking scenes, not to mention the competing claims of Corky's two widows.

Is Corky McDahl dead or alive?

Though the Surfing Detective seems the last to know, his client gains a great deal more than her money paid for.

Good series

Corky wanted to make a name for himself surfing, taking out a large insurance policy and leaving a very pregnant wife at home. He also had other interests , expensive car, money, was he a missing surfer, or a disappearance, too many red flags. That was on Christmas Eve, just after sundown he wiped out, so not much light. Interesting case, you learn about wipe out means, and looking for clues, good enjoyable read.

The Surfing Detective is On the Case Again

The second book in the 'Surfing Detective Mystery' series, 'Wipeout!', has Kai working for a big-wave surfer's widow. She wants Kai to prove that her husband died in the water while surfing some of Hawaii's biggest waves. His life insurance company is delaying payout because there are red flags hinting he may have faked his death. While Kai isn't confident he'll find any evidence one way or another, he agrees to do his own investigating.

This book, like the first, immerses the reader in the cultures of both Hawaii and surfing. Kai searches for information among the surfing community and even gets in on the action, surfing a big wave that is outside his skill level. The mystery itself has a few twists that will keep the reader guessing.

The way Kai investigates reminds me of the surfer's image. He's laid-back, practical and chill. He doesn't ever seem to be overly excitable. I like his style.

Scott Ellis performs the narration excellently. I love his interpretation of author Chip Hughes' words. The cadence and accents sound authentic.

I received a free review copy of this audiobook, at my request. I am now posting my voluntary opinion of it.

Recommended.

Wipeout

I tried really hard to get into this audible but couldn't. It was most likely the way surfers talk, not for me

The narrative was really good.

I received a copy of this audible free at my request. All thoughts and comments in my review are strictly my own
