About this listen
War has raged in the West for nearly two decades. The realm of water will never forgive the treachery and betrayal of fire. But a greater immortal evil is returning out of the dark, forcing a brave few to question the true origins of the conflict...
In the hinterlands of Glaidde, Eridene Swansea yearns to restore favor with her realm. For she is a half-blood, deemed country scum for her barbarian mother's crimes. Her only hope of redemption is doing the impossible - ending the war.
Where she knows little of dinner parties, she knows much of the sword.
She will stop the war at all costs.
She will wield the claymore, the blade of her ancestors... but it will take following her mother's path and branding herself a traitor to the very powers she is desperate to please.
For intrigue weaves itself even among kings, and the ancient dark runs deeper than she could have ever imagined.

Plenty of twists and turns that were well done
This story was really interesting and different. I read the first book in the series awhile ago and so it a second for some of that to come back but for the most part this reads separately. It is set in the same world but we are in a different kingdom though Jamie does make an appearance. We are following Eridene, who we did meet in the first book but I don't feel would be necessary to have read prior to this. Eridene is in a tough spot and we quickly figure that out due to her heritage and what is happening in the realm as well as how things went down with her mom. There are things that she has blocked out and doesn't fully remember from that time as a young girl, though it ends up being very important later on. This story has a lot of twists and turns that are woven very, very well. It keeps you guessing and wondering, in the right ways, as Eridene is trying to figure things out. She heads to the Kaippon, on mission to try and earn a good name and stop the war that is happening. Things are not all as they seem and Eridene ends up separately and on her own for this part of the journey and then with the enemy. She has to figure out what is actually right and wrong and where the truth is. I thought the story was well done and had a good pace. I enjoyed this one more than the first book and stayed more engaged throughout the story with the characters. I will definitely check out the next book in the series and see what is happening next in this world.
This one is an AI generated narrator and I didn’t think it was bad. It doesn’t showcase all the emotions but had a good pace and flow to it.
