About this listen

Daniel Hill will never forget the day he heard these words: "Daniel, you may be white, but don't let that lull you into thinking you have no culture. White culture is very real. In fact, when white culture comes in contact with other cultures, it almost always wins. So it would be a really good idea for you to learn about your culture."

Confused and unsettled by this encounter, Hill began a journey of understanding his own white identity. Today he is an active participant in addressing and confronting racial and systemic injustices. And in this compelling and timely book, he shows you the seven stages to expect on your own path to cultural awakening. It's crucial to understand both personal and social realities in the areas of race, culture, and identity.

This book will give you a new perspective on being white and also empower you to be an agent of reconciliation in our increasingly diverse and divided world.

I truly enjoyed this perspective. When I bought the book I didn't realize how God centered that it is. WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE!! In 2018 it is clear how divided our country is, racially, even in the church. I highly recommend!

I state the above because when reading the reviews I could not help but to discover a surprising number of people must have reviewed this book without reading it through.

This book covers exactly what all of us need to consider, so everyone can recognize the ways we can be conditioned, without any intention on our part. Thought provoking!!!

This book contains appropriate information from cover to cover. Alot of thought went into how the content unfolds. I appreciate the balanced views that make up this book.

Some reviewers seem to be overly touchy. Perhaps they were not ready to encounter the subject matter, no matter how much loving forethought went into developing chapters.

One of the many things I appreciate about this book is the idea that readers take time to absorb how the content applies to them, personally, before putting pressure on oneself to urgently apply all of what is learned. First and foremost: center ourselves...

I agree this is an issue that is long, long overdue, yet it is specifically because the issue is far too long overdue that those on the receiving end, through no fault of their own, have been rubbed raw while having been expected to wait, patiently, for any thing and every thing, that even smacks of racism, to be addressed and denounced, that we are called to mercifully proceed with the softened heart of a peacemaker. Do proceed...

RELAX: THIS BOOK DOES NOT GUILT TRIP READERS

What is so compelling about this book is how authentic and honest the author is about the journey of racial awareness. There is no pretension or judgment, just honest self-reflection and helpful tools for others to join the journey. Highly recommend for all who are at the start to their journey of racial identity and toward racial justice.

Excellent, Compelling, Honest

D. Hill presents a thorough, thoughtful, linear, and accessible piece of work on racial injustices and systemic racism. I found J. Hempel’s narration grating, however. His pronunciation of words common in the Christian faith was distracting. His narrating felt robotic, in part, because of this.

Hill doesn’t just speak from personal experience. He provides a firm scriptural foundation for a biblical response to “mourning with those who mourn” and “being united in Christ” for the purpose of fulfilling the two commands that are above all others, loving God with our whole heart, soul & might and loving others above ourselves.
