About this listen

It's the year 1969. I was serving in the US Army with my brothers of First Platoon Company A 3/1 11th Bde Americal (23rd Infantry) Division. We were average American sons, fathers, husbands, or brothers who'd enlisted or been drafted from all over the United States and who'd all come from different backgrounds. We came together and formed a brotherhood that will last through time. I share my experiences about weeks of boredom and minutes to hours of terror and surviving the heat, carrying a 60-pound rucksack, monsoons, a forest fire, a typhoon, building a firebase, fear, death, and fighting the enemy while mentally, physically, and morally exhausted.

Very Enjoyable

This is not a tough talking "hero" story. Haynie talks about the friendships among the grunts. They saw plenty of combat and he describes the circumstances but talks about the humanity and emotions more than the blood and guts. He won a Silver Star but didn't see himself as a hero. Thirteen men in his platoon were killed during his time with them and he pays tribute to thrm. This is a good book.

Excellent realistic and accurate story

I loved it from start to stop. I was in the Marine Corps during the same time period that this is taking place and also stationed in I Corps...in the Da Nang area. It allowed me to follow his same time line and remember all that I experienced ...month by month. Thank you for taking the time to cronical your experiences and allowing me to also remember all my Brothers as well as the good, the bad, and the ugly of it. My wife has a hard time understanding how after not speaking with someone for 45 years you can get on the phone and talk for three hours straight as if it were yesterday. God Bless all my Viet Vet Brothers no matter what branch of the service. Love you guys! Semper Fi to all!!

I can't be the only one?

I really liked the story when it was focused on Glyn Haynie. The first time or two when the narrative switched I was able to follow along. It seemed like the 2nd half? Last 1/3rd it got super confusing at times I thought I had rewound multiple chapters, as it was action I had heard, but slightly different. Maybe a second or third narrator would have helped? Unfortunately Mr Klass is just a "monotonal" reader?

Excellent account of a year in Viet Nam

Very moving account of a young soldier's year in Vietnam and the bond of brotherhood that forms in combat. Thank you to all the men who served in Vietnam and to Glyn Haynie for telling the story of his time in Vietnam and the first platoon soldiers that served with him. I highly recommend this book.
