Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.

Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.

But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way - even if it kills her.

Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

John Marrs does it again!!!!

Maggie and Nina take the complicated mother - daughter relationship to another level. The weight of their choices has its own gravitational pull and sucks in those who get to close with unmatched fury. John Marr unpacks his characters slowly, and doesn't mind if we don't like them because he'll ensure we understand them in the final act. If you like your novels to keep you guessing and aren't afraid of the darker side of human nature, you need to just read everything he's written. This is no exception. Brilliant narration as well!

Pathetic women

Both main characters are pathetic and the story is predictable. I made myself complete it because I rarely do not finish what I start.

Mothers and Daughters

If you're looking for a warm and fuzzy story about mother/daughter relationships, this is not it. Basically, mom covers up for her obviously deranged teen daughter, and teen doesn't "snap out" of her mental illness as she gets older. Chaos ensues. I found it harder to sympathize with Maggie as the book went on, because she was ultimately to blame for the situation. Lesson here: if your daughter is insane, take her for treatment. Don't bury her secrets in the garden. PS..did no one miss Dad at all? Co-workers, friends, etc? That was a bit sketchy. Excellent narration by Elizabeth Knowelden. She does a great job with the dual characters. All in all, an dark, entertaining read.

Cannot turn it off! So good!

Grabs you from the get-go. I kept thinking I knew what would happen next, and proven wrong every time.! I'll be curious to know what others think about the ending. I don't want to give it away by sharing my opinion. Definitely a must read with awesome narration!

Oh My Stars!

I’ve never written a full review. As a former English teacher, literature lover, and current therapist, I must say that this book absorbed ALL of my attention. I love the first person point of view from each character’s perspective. Thank you for such a satisfying read and use of my precious credit.

Good book but could be better

The narrator was really good. I enjoyed her. *Spoiler Alerts* But I wish there could have been a happier ending. I was rooting for the mum! I just wanted her to break free and then when Dillion showed up, I thought for sure she was getting out. I never dreamed Nina would hurt her own son. Putting him in chains in the basement, I could see her doing that from the start. She ached and longed for him. Overall this was a good book just not my cup of tea.
