About this listen
The fifth Spookie Town murder mystery is finally out.
Who wouldn’t want to find a chest of buried treasure, ancient gold coins, and exquisitely priceless jewelry on their land? A treasure a sailor dead for over 70 years once found in the shallow waters of a distant island and later buried, hid, the remnants of at the end of his tragic life. The townspeople of Spookie have been searching, fighting, and killing each other over it for decades, and no one has ever unearthed it. Abigail, Frank, Myrtle, and her psychic grandniece, Glinda, are on the hunt for the treasure...and they might just find it with Glinda’s and the dead sailor’s help.
For Frank, ex-Chicago homicide detective, there’s also a new and dangerous case that brings him temporarily out of retirement and back to Chicago because it threatens his adopted daughter Laura’s safety at the art college she is attending. There are three missing college students, young women, one a close friend of Laura’s, and the Chicago police force is feverishly searching for them before their abductors kill them. Can Frank, with a little help from Glinda’s visions and his old partner, Sam Cato, locate the abducted girls in time and save their lives? All the rest of the quirky characters are also back again to share in the adventures, the mysteries, and the small town life of foggy Spookie. Come join them.

Story
Abigail Sutton's beloved husband walks out one night, doesn't return, and two years later is found dead, a victim of a long ago crime. It's made her sympathetic to the missing and their families. Starting her new life, Abigail moves to small town and buys a fixer-upper house left empty when old Edna Summers died. Once it was also home to Edna's younger sister, Emily, and her two children, Jenny and Christopher, who, people believe, drove away one night, thirty years ago, and just never came back.

Am insightful spooky town mystery
I enjoyed reading series 5 on my kindle and listened as well while I did my daily walks. I think the narration on this particular one was a little off (Frank and Myrtle sounded very old) and I must admit I read the majority of the book in lieu of listening. The storyline was very good and lent more insight to the cast of characters in these mysteries. I am looking forward to #6 and hope the narration is a little better.

Too formulaic
All off the Spooky Town mysteries are the same. I've bought the same story 5 times. I love the characters but they are also becoming redundant.

The Spookie Saga continues...........
What Lies Beneath the Graves is the fifth book in the Spookie Town Murder Mystery Series, but I think it could be read as a standalone without too much trouble. I had listened to the first book in the series months ago, and I had no trouble jumping the three books in between. Spookie is a small town in Illinois where Abigail, an artist, her husband Frank, a retired Chicago policeman, Myrtle, a 90+ year-old woman, and her grandniece Glinda, a powerful psychic, live a quiet life. That is until another mystery throws this peaceful existence into chaos again. This book includes two separate investigations, tied together only by the four main characters.
Frank returns to Chicago to keep an eye on his former colleagues as they investigate the disappear of three college women, one of whom happens to be the roommate of Frank and Abigail's daughter. At the same time, Glinda has enlisted the assistance of the Frank, Abigail and Myrtle after she is visited by the spirit of a former pirate ship captain requesting her help to find his family. This begins a detailed search through town records to find the captain's missing family and possibly a buried treasure he left behind. For those listeners that enjoy a touch of the paranormal with their mystery as well as the wonderful flavor of Spookie Town and it's eccentric residents, this book is an ideal choice. The relationship between Myrtle, Glinda, Frank and Abigail is truly the most delightful part of the entire book.
I enjoyed Nila Brereton Hagood's narration. Each of the books in the series has a different narrator, so the change isn't as bothersome as if could be given that this is the fifth book. Hagood differentiates lightly but well between characters, and her performance is flawless. This is the third book to which I have listened that she narrates, and it won't be my last.

A Hodgepodge
Set in a town called "Spookie," the townspeople, including a psychic and an ex-homicide detective, go on a hunt for hidden treasure based on a vision that Glinda, the local psychic, had from a dead sailor's ghost. Supposedly, he discovered a priceless trove of gems and coins that he, upon his death, buried somewhere on his property. Now Glinda owns this house and land, and when the sailor's ghost visits her, he begs her to find it and pass it on to a daughter who may or may not still be alive.
An intriguing premise, this story had potential. The problems arise quickly, however, when it's obvious the author tried to cram a ghost story in with a murder mystery in with . . . something else? The plot is fractured and segmented, seeming almost as though it had originally been two or three stories spliced up and combined into one book. There is way too much repetition of facts, setting details, and . . . well, the reader could probably list every variety of donut in the one character's shop. This caused the pace to lag, and the reader to say, "So get on with the story, already!" The writing itself sparkles in places, however, with poetic turns of phrase. This reader feels that if the author concentrates on ONE main premise--ghost story, psychic story, or murder mystery--her writing has the potential to soar.
The narrator does an admirable job of portraying a wide variety of voices. I received a copy of this audiobook free for an honest review.

Interesting read!
psychics, ghosts, greed, family, friendship, cozy-mystery, law-enforcement, small-town
Interesting lovely cozy mystery set in a rural small town. There's the rumors of hidden treasure, interesting characters with interesting lives, a horror to be solved by a retired homicide detective in the big city, and neighbors who need help. I've never read any of the earlier books but that didn't matter. I really enjoyed this one!
The narrator is Nila Brereton Hagood who does a remarkable job! Her voice interpretation of Aunt Myrtle sounds just like our Aunt of about the same age and propensities!
I won it in a giveaway and I really win!

Fun Cozy Mystery
This is book #5 in the Spookie Town Murder Mystery series. I have not read the previous books but I could easily follow everything that is going on. There are quite a few characters to keep up with.
Narration was well done and brought the story to life. Her multiple voices made it easy to identify who was speaking.
There are multiple POVs in this book. There are two completely separate mysteries going on in this book. The first one is involving a ghost and his lost treasure and the second one happens in another place where female college students have gone missing.
There is a lot going on at once and although it is a bit hard to keep up with all the characters, the story sucked me in and kept me entertained. There are some twists and turns that I did not see coming.
Here you will find an ex-homicide detective, a psychic, ghosts, friendships, mysteries, danger, and some humor.
