Publisher's summary

Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world - and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror - a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

Okay

I loved the actual writing - the vocabulary and language - and the narration was excellent, but the story just rambled on way too much. I felt little connection to the characters.

Amazing story read superbly

Just finished it and even with several unread books in my library awaiting my attention I really just want to start this one again.
The writing is captivating, the story drew me in so completely, and Simon Vance's delivery is flawless.

Before Neverwhere ?

A magic journey into wonderland. This story ends where Neverwhere begins. And it was wonderfully read by Simon Vance.

lots of content

I felt like there was a lot of world building jammed into this, along with multiple "false ends". I thought the book was going to end at least 3 times but there was hours left to listen to. I am sure this kind of tale is good for some people but not for me. seemed well done and fleshed out and well performed, just way too much content for me. I won't read it again or think about it but glad it is over.

Honestly…I enjoyed it

Definitely more fantasy than horror, but I definitely enjoyed the story in all. Narrator did a spectacular job as well. Yes the story is a little lengthy…but I didn’t mind. Definitely my cup of tea!

Revisiting this book I read as a teenager in 1992 or so...still magical!

Clive Barker is a wonderful storyteller with a huge imagination, and this was one of my early favorites of his. It's definitely a departure from the more horror-themed works of his, although there still is some pretty horrific stuff in it. It's more fantasy, this one. Fantasy with a dark but huge heart.

What I particularly love is his use of English; I can hear the debt to Shakespeare that we all have, but it's especially pronounced here, I think. Beautiful imagery, perhaps a little overly flowery at times, but never self-conscious. I always found myself swept along.

Also, as a sidenote, Barker was clearly raised in some sort of Christian tradition, because his knowledge of the imagery/iconography which informs some of the characters and situations is quite pronounced, without the book being religious in and of itself at all. In fact, I would imagine based on this that he is more of a pagan type, but with a huge debt to all the myths. That's just an aside, and adds a layer of richness, especially if you are a fan of that sort of thing.

The narration was quite good, although I hear certain characters differently when I read it on the page. That's no fault of the narrator, of course, but I did have to get used to it. Once I could make that internal switch, it was smooth sailing.

Anyway, if you are into dark fantasy and great imagination, this one should be at the top of your list. I really wish they would make a film or a Netflix series or something out of it, because I feel like it would have strong legs.

After all, nothing ever begins...or ends.

The real trailblazer for dark fantasy.

No work is perfect. But this is one of those that comes pretty close. The theological implications in the last third of the book are jaw dropping.

A place for raptures

For Clive Barker, who I enjoy, this was a far cry from his “norm”. A very well executed adventure about other worlds, magic, corruption, ghosts, myth, greed, love, and survival. Simon Vance knocked the narration out of the park as usual. I WILL be listening to this again.
