About this listen
Michigan. To tens of thousands of womyn from around the globe, the word meant not a state in the upper Midwest of the U.S., but a state of mind, a state of freedom. A culture, a community, a revolution. The Land. From 1976 to 2015, the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival was home ground for the lesbian feminist movement. There we strove to embody the principles of matriarchal feminism and bring that wisdom to life in every aspect of the town we created, and the values that guided our lives together.

Story
Charlotte Bellows wrote The Definition of Beautiful between the ages of 15 and 17, in the wake of lockdown and in recovery from anorexia. In the tradition of Sylvia Plath in The Bell Jar and Françoise Sagan in Bonjour Tristesse, Bellows writes with deceptively straightforward urgency, pushing through society's constraints on the bodies and minds of girls and women to offer a story both achingly familiar and devastatingly new.

Women Rule!
This was a beautiful telling of the birth and history of the Michigan Womyns’ Music Festival, told by the creator, who was the heart and soul of it. Those forty years were years of incredible growth and changes in society and through it all the festival persevered because of the amazing amazons who wanted it and worked for it. The few times I attended were joyous and life affirming, but I had no real grasp on how much work, physically, emotionally, psychically and financially went into it. Thank you LV for all the years and especially for sharing your story so eloquently. We CAN live like this.

I have missed this space, your voice, the laughter, strength, and tears of our community. Thank you for bringing it back to me, if only for 12 hours. I so deeply appreciate your service to our sisterhood, how bravely and passionately you have cared about, and for us, and how you have modelled sincerity, vulnerability, growth, creativity, and leadership for the rest of us, now, and in the future. This is the heart felt story of thousands of women's lives
The story of the world that women created every summer for 40 years is mind blowing.
The story reads like a well written if somewhat fantastic novel. But it's all true.
I bought the book and read some of it. Then I found out that the author was releasing an Audible version and she was the reader. I immediately set aside the print version.
I laughed, I cried, I chuckled, I guffawed. I have rarely enjoyed a book as much as I did this book.
I listened to the book on a road trip from Wisconsin to Indianapolis IN. and back. Several times I had to pull off the road to regain my composure. The story is that intense.
My only wish is that we really could live like this all the time for the rest of our lives

Couldn't put it down!
Even though I didn't go to Michfest, I absolutely loved this book. Lisa is a great storyteller and learning about how they started THE iconic women's music festival that lasted 40 years, along with the triumphs and hardships along the way was fascinating. I was at an event on womyn's land and still managed to listen to the whole book in two days.
