Publisher's summary

At 29, Claire is full of the joys of life - that is, until her husband leaves her on the day she gives birth to her baby. With a broken heart, a beautiful newly born and an expanding mirror image, she decides to visit her eccentric family in Dublin. There she starts to feel better. So much better, in fact, that James is in for a surprise when he decides to slither back into her life.

The humor and humanness

I like the imperfections of the characters and the families and yet they were lovable

A little funny and snarky

The story was good but the racism against Italians was really cringey and the simpering woman bit when it came to dealings with the ex was a bit nauseating.

Good, but should be shorter

The middle is terribly boring. But overall the book is excellent. A little unrealistic at times and occasionally funny.

I enjoyed it

I've read all of the other Walsh Family chronicles, so I was surprised to realize this was book 1. Thank you for bringing it to us, audible! I found the characters realistic and relatable. It was not my favorite of Keyes' books, but I enjoyed it.

Great narration

Very cute story. Marion Keyes is hysterical. I will definitely read more of her books.

Excessive Musings

I feel like this book wouldve gotten 5 stars if it didn't ramble so much. I don't need to hear every rambling thought of the main character. Oh my God!
For reference, I loved the Eleanor Oliphant novel.. But the internal dialogue of the this book was absolutely obnoxious. The plot barely moved because there was so much rambling filler.

I hope this is not how the author writes all her books because I can't take more of this.

A fun read, every time

This book was my introduction to Marian Keyes and her writing, back when I was working in the Walmart photo lab in 1998 or 1999, and I bought this book from their display to read on my lunch break. I was an instant fan. I was hooked immediately by her smart and sassy writing style, and the story moves along at a perfect pace. I’ve looked on Audible for years, waiting for the audiobook, and it’s finally available! The narrator does a pretty decent job at reading it with the same inflections I always have as I read to myself, so 10/10 would recommend.

Great storytelling

The author is very good at developing characters and very much understands the human condition. Without giving too much away there are excellent examples of malignant narcissism and gaslighting in this story about relationships and family dynamics. The authors with and sense of humor makes heartbreaking situations easier to handle. The narrator was wonderful! Well worth a listen.

True life

Narcissistic husband. Realizing she can’t control life. Letting go and reaping the benefits. So funny
