In war, there is no second place. To ensure victory, planetary governments employ private armies to help fight their battles. And the Berserkers are the best. Their job was to kill and get paid handsomely for it, but being a hired gun doesn't mean there isn't a code. For the Berserkers, that means taking care of their own. Captain Ron Axel finds that mantra tested to the limit when he must lead a daring mission to rescue a Berserker force trapped deep behind enemy lines on a bleak frontier world. With no margin for error, the Berserkers must fight to survive against an onslaught of hostile forces, and Axel must choose between accomplishing the mission or the survival of his men.

They stand to make the biggest payday in the galaxy...if they can live long enough to spend it.

As a retired military person, it bothers me to hear a narrator say a military acronym wrong.
A Forward Operating Base (FOB) is NOT said as F. O. B. It is pronounced ‘fob’ like a key fob. Military people don’t waste their breath or time spelling it out.
The voices were good and sounded different for the different characters. The narration was very good.
But, it really shows when everybody involved (narrator, editor, sound person, etc) have never served in the military. Maybe an old retired military guy should be brought in as a consultant.
In a different audio book the chow hall or DFAC was talked about a lot. And every time is was D.F.A.C. instead of d-fac. So much easier and smoother.

Updated version of David Drakes epic Hammer's Slammers with more techy weapons tech. Still hover tanks, plasma weapons, etc. Lots of gut wrenching, heart pounding combat that is generally well done. A relief column fighting through an enemy to relieve a surrounded enemy is not new but it is is well done here. The narrator does a good job with the frantic action. The MC is similar to one of Drakes main characters. My biggest gripe is the sub plot with the local arrogant Colonel. Just felt awkward and forced given the story, especially the "duels.". Also, while the tech was definitely advanced from today, it didn't seem advanced enough for a space faring human race. Just my opinion.....

It was definitely military sci-fi, but with a clear line back to todays equipment and tactics. Characters were realistic and the action was non-stop. I particularly enjoyed the drive to the FOP. Tactics mixed with action

I loved the tactics and story of this book. I found the character development a bit lacking. The pace and action of this book will pull you in.

Very good action packed and well writen. the author is well versed in military knowledge and tactics. Really enjoyed it from beginning to end.

This was a visceral, well done update of Hammer’s Slammers without the court intrigue. Ryan Aslesen is a talented author who provides a fresh perspective of military science fiction.

This reminds me of Hammer’s Slammers, though updated. I loved David Drake’s work, and you are a worthy successor. I wish you luck, you have gained a fan, Keep it up!

it was a good story about a officer who never quits and expects everyone fighting with him to never stop and to stay in the fight
