About this listen

Everything I thought he wanted was a lie....

I kept loving Holden Montgomery, even after he walked away, shattering my heart into a million pieces.

Now after four years, he's back on my doorstep…pleading for forgiveness and my hand in marriage.

He asked for time and I vowed to try, but now he was half a world away, deployed with the Marines.

Tragedy strikes, causing Holden to return to me half the man he was before. Now I'll have to decide if it's worth risking my heart for a second time, or if our chance at happiness has passed.

Second chance romance

This was a sweet second chance romance.

High school sweethearts, Pru & Holden had the future planed out, but life had a different plan.

Once you get past the typical tropes (Holden leaving without world, Pru being heartbroken and unable to forget him, her losing her father etc...) the story grabs you and you root for them to find happiness again.

The road to that isn't easy, they have to build trust again and believe that this time around they will make the right choices for the both of them.

The narrator did a good job bringing those two characters to life.

Not as wowed as others

Everyone loves this book! They say the love story is amazing! I, on the other hand, was bored and exasperated by Unsteady in Love. I repeatedly found myself rolling my eyes: would it REALLY have happened like this? So unlikely. Two people so in love in high school that they anticipate spending their whole lives together (and we've all either lived it or witnessed it), and then, bang--nothing. All communication terminated. This book takes place in our contemporary world, not the 19th century. And don't get me started on the silliness of so many of the Germany-supposedly military-based plot lines. Countless details throughout the book were absurd, as were the two main characters' continual flip-flopping between emotional commitment and disengagement. And the actual conversations often included saying the other's name; we don't do that in real life. (Not from the book, but imagine: "I think this is a good place to touch me, John." "I do, too, Mary." "I'm glad you suggested it, John." -NO! in intimate conversations we either omit names or use terms of endearment!!) Then there were the actual physical encounters, especially their first REAL one - and again, it seemed (to me, at least) totally unlikely and in fact rather off-putting. I can't go into graphic details in this review, but it did not involve the primary fantasy most (women) would yearn for after years of drought. For the first time they're physically intimate in years? Maybe the guy's primary fantasy, and maybe number two or three on the woman's list, but for their FIRST time together again? Then there were the tiny, but absurdly wrong details: a total stranger appears and sweeps up his mistress and the dog does/says(barks) nothing??? So, for those with more patience and tolerance than I have, this is a wonderful love story. Two young people love deeply, get separated, face challenges, and at long last, find happiness together again. With a dog! I requested and received a complimentary copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this review. The narration was fine.

Sweet Romance

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This was so sweet! I really want to read the ones that came first in this series. I know they are all standalone, but I want to get to know the other characters. Prue and Holden are so strong. I loved their story. I would read more by this author. The narrator was awesome too!

I LOVED IT!

I absolutely loved it! This book caught my attention from the very beginning and held it throughout the entire book. The narration was superb and gave the story that extra flair! The author did an excellent job with the character builds and plot. This was my first book by this author but definitely not my last. I look forward to reading more books by this author! Prue💘Holden! Fantastic Story & Listen🎧 Heartfelt!

I loved everything about this book from Harlow Layne’s writing style to the storylines and characters she created. The story grabbed my attention right from the start and held it to the end. This book is the 3rd book in the “Fairlane” series but my first and I thoroughly enjoyed it as a stand alone. I adored the characters in this book, especially the two leads, Prue and Holden. They were a couple in love who had plans for the future, setting off to college together. But those plans never happened, Holden disappeared with no explanation. Fast Forward four years, Prue just lost her father and Holden shows up to offer his condolences. He wants to explain what why he had to leave but she does not want to hear it, does not think she can get past her broken heart. He does not give up and she hears him out, she also tells him how her life did not go as planned either. I loved how their story played out, how he came up with a solution that wold work for her knowing it would work for him as well. While he did not handle things back then well I liked the choices he made at the time instead of the alternative, he thought he was doing the right thing and sacrificed his own happiness doing so. But he is back to undo the wrong he did and hopefully make things right for and with Prue. I loved that they go a second chance, I also loved that Prue stuck it out for him when he tried pushing her away. This is a wonderfully moving story, it is emotionally charged at times and there is plenty of drama, angst, some twists all leading to a great second chance romance. Harlow Layne, thank you for this great story and the emotional rollercoaster ride.

I listened to the Audible edition, Lia Holland is a terrific narrator and voice performer. She brings these characters to life, gives each their own voice and personality. She does a great job projecting the emotions of the characters and the drama of the story into her performance. Lia Holland is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧

Beautiful story

I started the book thinking there was no way I would forgive Holden. It’s to the author’s credit to have a relatively credible reason for abandonment and then the rest of the book had Holden being such a sweet, wonderful, loving man that I ended up really loving him. Prue too, was a strong female character who deserved everything Holden was giving her. The ending was beautiful and I really am happy I got to hear this story.

Lia Holland’s did a good job. I think the biggest issue I had was that she tried for an accent for Luke, a supportive character, and I don't think it was necessary and wasn't my favorite. Also, I think it would have been best to have a male narrator too because of dual POV. But overall, I enjoyed listening to her narration.

This was so good I hated for it to end!!

I absolute loved Holden and Prue! This story was extremely emotional and I had to talk back to Holden a few times... to set him straight... but I had a hard time stopping for any reason while I was listening!

This story ripped my heart out at the beginning! But slowly repaired it during the rest of the book. Harlow Layne has such a way of telling these tales that it keeps you wanting more.

Lia Holland did wonderfully with the narration. Her character delineation was good and her voice is very pleasant!!

really wanted to like this one

I really wanted to like this book, but I ended up with mixed feelings.
the synopsis of the story is interesting, but the execution of the whole thing is lacking, in my opinion.
things are moving too fast, and I felt like the author wanted to squeeze as much as possible in a relatively short book.
I don't like it when one narrator narrates two POVs, especially when there are two genders.
