About this listen

According to statistics reported by CDC in 2020, one in 54 children in the USA were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in 2016. The latest statistics in the UK show that there are 700,000 autistic diagnoses. It is suggested that boys are four times more likely to get a diagnosis of autism than girls.

Like so many parents, you might be wondering if you are doing things by starting to potty train your child. Aside from being a speech and language therapist, I am also a mum, and I know the worry we put ourselves through about the right time to introduce new skills. The internet is our go-to resource to find our answers, but with such a wide spectrum, it’s hard to find the exact advice for your individual child.

One of your biggest questions you may be asking yourself is "should I even try to introduce potty training, as my child does not talk yet?". Whether your child has started using verbal language yet or not, you will know when your child is ready. I have put together a list of things to help recognize the signs when your child is ready and how they might express their readiness for potty training.

From the point of view of an experienced professional and a parent, we are going to look at all the different areas of potty training and helping your autistic child learn and practice their personal hygiene skills. This is the second book in a series of books dedicated to helping parents and families of ASD children. Check out my first book called, Understanding Autism, Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, which looks at what autism is, walks you through the diagnosis process, and much more.

In this book:

  • The importance of potty training
  • Is your toddler ready for potty training
  • Common hurdles you may encounter and their solutions
  • Developing Independence with personal hygiene
  • Teeth cleaning, nail cutting, bathing, hair brushing, and more

Each bite-sized book will cover a new topic. The third book in the series will be looking at how to help your child develop speech, language, and social communication skills. There will be lots of ideas for therapy that you can easily practice at home.

You will also be able to access a free step-by-step guide for potty training from a link in the book.

Highly Recommended!

I am so glad to have bought this book. It is so full of actionable information.
Being on the spectrum is now increasingly being diagnosed. More families have to raise an autistic child with boys 4x diagnosed than girls. I can differentiate autism from other conditions that may be similar because of this book.
This book teaches you in a very engaging way how to potty train. How to prep your little one for personal hygiene independence. Anyone can use the potty training guide. I highly recommend this book.

Very Practical & Out-Of-The-Box Advice!!

The author has great hands-on advice for parents to deal with the many aspects in the day to day life of a toddler. The book is laid out beautifully and the author gives very practical advice for : Potty training, Personal Hygiene, Brushing Teeth to name a few. This book is a boon for parents with Autistic kids or kids diagnosed with ASD. However, the practical advice given by the author here can be used on any kid and it will have good results! I liked it when the author dispelled all 'medical' terminology and called a spade a spade!! Every kid is different, and as you know your kid the best, take the practical no nonsense advice of this book and mold it to suit your needs. That's what I told my niece to do with their 18 month old daughter. The strategy of PECS & Social stories were implemented right away by my niece and my granddaughter is in the process of learning them! There are many cool tips and tricks for parents to keep the child engaged and amused and help them to learn to do the right thing gradually till they become trained & confident. My niece-in-law has already recommended this audio to many of his friends at work. My granddaughter's Pediatrician wants to keep a few copies of this audio in her clinic!!
The narration of Alice Wallis is excellent.

Good advice

Very helpful insight to potty training and other activities of daily living. Wish there was a magic wand I could use to get my autistic toddler to communicate, but I’m excited to try out some of her suggestions!

Fantastic!

I don't have autistic children, but some of my friends do, and I have always been intrigued by autism. This is a great listen for any parent going through potty training with their kids. Since autistic children need special attention, this audiobook does a fantastic job of describing a myriad of challenges that one may face when going thru the potty training process, and anyone can apply tips here to their children learning to use the toilet. 100% solid advice!

A difficult subject, admirably tackled.

This is a difficult subject and one which no one has any experience of when it is thrust upon them. The author does a great job of tackling the difficult issue you will face.
