About this listen

Learn about the US Federal Reserve with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. The US Federal Reserve is stirring more excitement these days than is probably recommended for a central bank just shy of its 100th birthday.

The Fed, tasked with fostering economic growth and price stability in the US, was ratified by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. It followed two failed attempts in two hundred years of boom and bust in what was to rapidly become the world’s leading economy. The Fed’s own lifetime has been scarcely less eventful. And today it tackles the gravest in a long line of crises that, for better and worse, have helped shape the US financial environment.

Under the leadership of Chairman Ben Bernanke, the Fed has plied a difficult course through the markets upheaval and economic recession that started with the US housing bust in 2007, and soon took on even greater, global significance. Those events have challenged the wisdom of earlier policies that drove strong credit growth and a philosophy of deregulation under Bernanke’s predecessor Alan Greenspan, and may have unearthed even more duties for the Fed as a financial watchdog in the complex network of the modern banking system.

Editorial reviews

iMinds presents a brief summary of the US Federal Reserve, formed to respond to financial crises in the United States and promote economic growth and recovery. With a scholarly disposition, Luca James Lee recounts the failures of the first attempts at a central banking system before the establishment of the US Federal Reserve in 1913 by Woodrow Wilson. But with the current economic downturn that the United States has been experiencing since 2007's housing bust, Lee focuses on the crucial role that the Fed must play, and the difficult challenges it faces, bringing clarity to the country's recession.

Critic reviews

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)

content is largely bounded by the mortgage crisis

why do you put background music? is it because the topic is so boring you need something else to lighten it up? listening to the podcast in 2021 teaches me almost nothing because the content is focused on what happened during 2007-2009

The writers unfortunately know nothing about it

This is really a poor synopsis of the 2007 mortgage crisis, not the Fed. It's only 5 min., but I had to stop halfway through at the phrase this caused a deflationary spiral that threatened business. Tell me, how would buying more with the same amount of money and your employees buying more with the same salary threaten a business...
