About this listen
Two Years Before the Mast, written by Richard Henry Dana, provides a vivid account of "the life of a common sailor at sea". Dana sails from Boston, around Cape Horn, stopping in several ports along the California coast, including San Diego, San Pedro, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco. On the return trip around Cape Horn in the middle of the Antarctic winter, Dana describes terrifying storms and incredible beauty, giving vivid descriptions of icebergs and the scurvy that afflicts members of the crew.

The mutiny on HMS Bounty, in the South Pacific on 28 April 1789, is one of history's truly great stories - a tale of human drama, intrigue and adventure of the highest order - and in the hands of Peter FitzSimons it comes to life as never before. Commissioned by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies, the Bounty's crew found themselves in a tropical paradise. Story
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Story
In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong: Delayed by a hurricane, knocked off course by a colossal error of navigation, and ultimately doomed by a disastrous decision to separate the men from their ships, the mission quickly became a desperate journey of survival. Of the 300 men who had embarked on the journey, only four survived - three Spaniards and an African slave.

Story
The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819 the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with 20 crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than 90 days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, and disease and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.

Story
In 1968, nine sailors set off on the most daring race ever held: to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe nonstop. It was a feat that had never been accomplished and one that would forever change the face of sailing. Ten months later, only one of the nine men would cross the finish line and earn fame, wealth, and glory. For the others, the reward was madness, failure, and death. In this extraordinary book, Peter Nichols chronicles a contest of the individual against the sea, waged at a time before cell phones and electronic positioning systems.

With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

Story
The small ship making the Liverpool-to-New York trip in the early months of 1856 carried mail, crates of dry goods, and more than 100 passengers, mostly Irish emigrants. Suddenly, an iceberg tore the ship asunder, and five lifeboats were lowered. As four lifeboats drifted into the fog and icy water, never to be heard from again, the last boat wrenched away from the sinking ship with a few blankets, some water and biscuits, and 13 souls. Only one would survive. This is his story.

Five months later, they did not want to leave.

Story
America's first frontier was not the West; it was the sea, and no one writes more eloquently about that watery wilderness than Nathaniel Philbrick. In his best-selling In the Heart of the Sea, Philbrick probed the nightmarish dangers of the vast Pacific. Now, in an epic sea adventure, he writes about one of the most ambitious voyages of discovery the Western world has ever seen - the US Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842.

Story
In the 1870s, newspaperman James Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald drummed up excitement and publicity for his paper through highly publicized missions of exploration. In 1879, Bennett's idea for a voyage was his most audacious to date: the North Pole. To do this, he hired a team of naval veterans in addition to a smattering of civilians with specialized knowledge in meteorology, whaling, and naturalism. The men on board the Jeannette set off in September of 1879. This would be the last time anyone saw them for two years.

It was rediscovered under the arctic waters in 2014.

Story
Captain James Cook is one of the greatest maritime explorers of all time. Over three remarkable voyages of discovery into the Pacific in the latter part of the 18th century, Cook unravelled the oldest mystery surrounding the existence of Terra Australis Incognita - the Great South Land. He became the first explorer to circumnavigate New Zealand and establish that it was two main islands; discover the Hawaiian Islands for the British Empire; and left an enduring legacy.

Story
Drawing on historical documents and contemporary accounts and on exclusive interviews with Carlsen's family, Delaney opens a window into the world of the merchant marine. With deep affection, and respect, for the weather and all that goes with it, he places us in the heart of the storm, a "biblical tempest" of unimaginable power. He illuminates the bravery and ingenuity of Carlsen and the extraordinary courage that the 37-year-old captain inspired in his stalwart crew.

Nautical Mispronunciations
It is unfortunate that reader did not consult a nautical dictionary as to the pronunciation of certain often used words. 'Forecastle" is pronounced fo'c's'l and never as spelled. To measure the depth of water the sailor tosses the "lead" (rhymes with head and is a lead (mine is made of bronze) weight attached to a line. "Victualing" is not pronounced as written, but as "vittles".

New Reader please
Would you consider the audio edition of Two Years Before the Mast to be better than the print version?
No, the reader was a very poor choice for this recording.
What didn’t you like about Pat Bottino’s performance?
He sounded too old. Not just his voice, but his manner of reading. The adventures of a young man are read by a stuffy sounding museum tour guide voice. I'd prefer better talent or at least someone who engages the text when they read instead of this reader.

Wrong reader
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes, relearned a lot of early
california histery
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would not change the story because that is the way it was for sailors in that time.
What three words best describe Pat Bottino’s voice?
His voice was okay, his naiutical pronunciation was all off.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
It was a movie, several years ago. Yes, I would go and see it again..
Any additional comments?
Biggest comment was that Bottino should have had a real seaman go over his reading with him. I don't know how many times I cringed when I heard him refer to the forecastle. The word is pronounced "Folk-sul." Also when nearing Boston on the return trip he spoke of a man "being in the chains" and taking soundings by swinging the lead. The sounding lead is pronounced lead as in bed or dead. Not as 'you lead and I'll follow" While not mentioned in the book, life for a common sailor didnt' really improve much until welll into the 20th century. Even up to the 1930's seamen were not treated much better than slaves. My thanks to my seamen brothers who helped to change that. I went to sea from 1946 until 1994 when I retired. ,

Excellent sea sailing story. Horrible narration. Sounded like a robot. I have to order another version. Sad I had to spend a credit on another version of the same story.

Reader robotic and monotonous
What would have made Two Years Before the Mast better?
The reader of this book made listening very difficult. I quickly abandoned the audio book and went directly to the text. I found the book quite book.
What didn’t you like about Pat Bottino’s performance?
Robotic and monotonous. It almost sounded as though it was a computerized voice.
