About this listen

Ella works as an unpaid housekeeper to her usurping uncle…until she meets her cousin’s fiancé, Lord Peregrine. A charming, witty version of Cinderella from bestselling author Eloisa James

Miss Ella St. Trevelyon lives in the attic of her former home, her only companions a pet squirrel and a three-legged cat. Then one night she accompanies her cousin Fulvia to the theatre, where she meets a man of princelike wealth, with forceful features and insolent manners.

Unfortunately, Lord Peregrine is engaged to marry Fulvia.

Fiennes Peregrine is not a man who would ever chase after a woman waving a shoe. But he is a man used to getting what he wants.

And he wants Ella.

inoffensive but boring

This second installment is definitely better than the first in that it is not disturbing and awful, but neither is it particularly interesting. The characters are forgettable, and the plot, such as it is, is plodding and predictable.

Eloisa James is always a great read!

I was thrilled to see three more books from Eloisa James released just as my annual 12 credits arrived. This is book number two. It was just as good as the first one. As always, it had fun, relatable characters, humor, low angst, and a good love story. This one is a riff on Cinderella with stepmother (actually the h’s aunt) and stepsister (cousin) having redeeming qualities.
I happily spent a credit on it.

A warm and satisfying fairy tale

As in real fairy tales, the bad guys are really bad and the good guys are really good, and then everyone gets what they deserve. Enjoyable characters survive and thrive. Excellent for days when you need a lift.

Narration - not so good

Couldn't tell the difference between the characters due to the narration. Story was just okay, maybe I was just expecting too much based on the author's other books. Disappointing.

Uninspired, shallow

I normally like Eloisa James. This felt like it was written by someone else. It was like a string of cliches put together with no character development. Just random lines with no thought about the overall story. The first book of this series was disappointing, but I thought maybe this one would be better. It was not.
