Publisher's summary

The secrets buried below can make him a Hero above... if he can find them.

Milo lives in a steel cave within a man-made mountain of steel and concrete. He spends his days repairing the machinery that keeps the habitat livable and tinkering with the prosthetics that help his twisted body move about through the small tunnels and air shafts that are his world.

He's as much a piece of discarded machinery as the equipment he keeps running. An escaped lab experiment living in a hole.

Given a chance at being someone different, will he become a hero and live in the sunlight? The light beckons, but there are secrets buried in the ground. Ancient mysteries left by races that delved deep and stayed below.

Maybe only a tunnel rat can discover them...

Don't miss the start of this unique spin on LitRPG featuring an unusual MC you can't help but root for. Featuring plenty of humor, action, thievery, ninja abilities, a detailed world and System, science skills, magic tinkering, item invention, and more originality than you can shake a rat tail at!

A great standout

I enjoyed the class and story in the book. I also like how the MC isn't accidentally perfect in everything they touch and there is a reasonable explanation for his certain advantages. All in all I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one!

Best VR novel Ive ever read.

So I read tunnel rat on royal road and have been enchanted the walrus kings work ever since. They do a great job of making both the real world and game world engaging. Milo has plot threads tying him to both world and they mix over pretty well. The reader did a great job with the narration, although the voices are of course completely different from what I imagined when reading, most were pleasantly new interpretations that I enjoyed.

Optimistic fun story with a dash of absurd realism, about a young engineer that outsmarts a distopian world

I've loved reading Walrusking's "The butcher of Gadobhra" story on Royal Road that plays in the same world, but I hadn't gotten to reading "Tunnel Rat". When the author announced they had just published a story on Audible I gave it a shot.

I loved to story. It has a much smaller cast than TBOG, but it also has some really imaginative arcs that make you smile because they show over and over again how smarts overcome the oppression of structures and characters of power. If you are looking for a fun story about a character with an unrelenting optimism that outsmarts a dystopian world. you will love this story.

The narration irked me a bit at first, but turning the speed to 1.05 or 1.10 scratched the itch.

Good

I enjoyed it. Would recommend. 15 word minimum is annoying. RUS (rats of unusual size) for the win.

Although I read it on RR I still loved every moment of it.

Laughed out loud most of the second half. Also had to hit Wikipedia for some references :)

Leaking water pipe Milo’s your man! Grab this fantastic gamelit adventure!

Ohhhh I really, really liked Tunnel Rat and Milo’s perfect for the job! He's keeping the habitat where he lives in working order. Thus he's keeping all the inhabitants alive with good air, water, and power. Taking care of the myriad of other things that keep everything working. But when Milo claimed a new Mark VII pod... he finds himself logging into the the latest rage on the internet a virtual reality game! Milo is such a good guy, he manages to shut an illegal operation down, saving thousands of people, keep his people in the hab safe, all the while fighting for the good in game! Get the book to find out what happens next! And yes there's plenty of story-threads left dangling, that you're gonna need the next book. As a litRPG it's quite crunchy but that's neither here nor there just grab the book!

Here's some quotes you might find amusing:

"Anyone who argues gets a bad case of dead."

"Slaughtering crew needed to cull the land squid population. Cooking or Sushi preparation gets you a bonus."

"continue with all ninety-seven stanzas of ‘Begone, Spirit, Begone.’" One of the more elderly women got excited. “Oh, I always liked that one! We used to take a sip of wine at the end of each stanza. It made things fun."

"This skill is perfect for the bored engineer who needs to know what happens when you turn the knob to 11."
