Publisher's summary

The first time Martha sees the house, she knows it's evil. So she's not surprised when she finds out that someone was murdered in it. She also thinks that someone is watching her. Martha's pretty certain that this Halloween is going to be the scariest of her life, and possibly her last.

Editorial reviews

With her voice perfectly pitched to capture the teenage angst of protagonist Martha, narrator Liisa Ivary quickly plunges the listener into the complications of Martha's life as she and her father move in to a new house with her stepmother and stepbrother Conor. From the beginning, Martha knows that the house is evil, and she's not surprised to find out that someone has been murdered there. When the practical jokes and creepy phone calls begin, she's sure that these aren’t just Halloween tricks. Listeners will enjoy Ivary's expert contrast between Martha’s internal narrative, delivered with wholesome charm, and the encroaching evil that threatens her.

Great Story

As a teacher, this has been one of my favorites to share with young people. It gives subtle clues along the way leading to a big surprise ending.

Good story

I really like this author, and the story is good, but the main character is a major brat!

It’s a good book

I feel like it was kinda left on a cliffhanger but that’s probably just me.

Was okay.

impeded by annoying melodrama and characters as real as cardboard cut outs, this was nevertheless mostly entertaining.

Hokey Blast From The Past

Read this book as a young person in the 90s, loved hearing it again as an Audible. It was definitely fun and brought up some spooky Halloween feelings. A lot of it has not aged well at all, from the completely inappropriate and creepy guidance counselor hanging out with the students to the author’s weird insinuation that the stepbrother isn’t a real relative and thus the obvious flirtation is okay. As others have pointed out, the main character is totally useless and helpless and doesn’t do anything but run around having to be rescued while screaming “Caww..nnnerr!!!???” endlessly. At some points it’s almost comical how often the poor narrator has to stretch out that word and try to perform. The narration itself is OK although again, this is the equivalent of a modern penny dreadful. I’m not trying to make it sound like it’s not fun, because it is, just that it’s easy listening for a spooky fall day. The ending is surprisingly gruesome, though, and more or less redeems the empty jump scares that come before.
