Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride. Narrated by Michael Kramer.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Note from Brandon:

I started writing this in secret, as a novel just for my wife. She urged me to share it with the world—and alongside three other secret novels, with the support of readers worldwide it grew into the biggest Kickstarter campaign of all time. I’m excited to present this first book to you at last: a different type of Brandon Sanderson story, one I wrote when there were no time constraints, no expectations, and no limits on my imagination. Come be part of the magic.

Not so subtle wokeness

Decent story. You can see the parallels between this book and The Princess Bride. However, it’s now like we must have unnatural and forced sensitivities and representations. Subtract one star from the story for going the route of Disney. If you want people to stop reading your material, keep “progressing.”

A good story worth reading

While very different from Sanderson's typical storytelling, the book holds up. Although intentional on his part, if there was a complaint, it is that it is too fairy-tale-ish. The beginning was difficult to get into, it was frankly boring, but I read on trusting that Sanderson is a good writer and that he had an unfortunate start to this one. Of course it quickly picked up and stayed engaging. I thinked it was a balanced enough adult fairy tale for most of the book, however toward the end it begins to lose the balance that makes it a great adult fairy tale and tips toward a children's story. I want to be clear that I enjoyed that it was a type of fairy tale. However, the ending with the sorceress was unremarkable. At no moment when confronting the sorceress did I feel the significance she bore on Tresses's world, it felt frankly demeaning to a character full of great mystery. She loses her potential when you meet her. I think the ending could use a bit more treachery, suspense and wit, at the moment it felt like a lot of handwaving and making the sorceress, frankly, stupid. The harsh critique of the ending aside (it was only 1/10 of the book), the story was very enjoyable.

Brando Sando with all the snark and whimsy unleashed.

This book really was a fun ride. I love the hitchhikers guide and gone away world tone it flung about with reckless acceptance. The attitude hit just right in the giggles, the twists made me actually gasp out loud, the hidden sayings in plain sight made me care and think. I think we need to pressure Brandon less if this is what comes out of him when he writes for funzies. Thanks for sharing this with the world, Brandon. You have my vote to get the first immortality drug when it’s invented (or maybe the one hundred and first after they work out the side effects).

I love it👏🏼

I was at first hesitant to go about a Brandon Sanderson’s book, oh the time I’ve waisted… It was espectacular, I did not see anything coming, everything was one surprise after another. Just perfect. Highly recommended!

Absolutely my favorite Brandon Sanderson book yet (and I've read his books for years).

Fun story line with lovely character development. most impressive was his wisdom shared; concise life lessons so cunningly slipped in (with a word, or a line, or a paragraph) simply amazed me. Well done, Sir! I'm not easily impressed!
