About this listen

Twelve-year-old Danny Walker may be the smallest kid on the basketball court, but don't tell him that. Because no one plays with more heart or court sense. But none of that matters when he is cut from his local travel team, the very same team his father led to national prominence as a boy. Danny's father, still smarting from his own troubles, knows Danny isn't the only kid who was cut for the wrong reason, and together, this washed-up former player and a bunch of never-say-die kids prove that the heart simply cannot be measured.Listen to the sequel, Summer Ball.©2005 Mike Lupica (P)2005 Listening Library Fiction Growing Up Multigenerational Family Basketball Heartfelt Kids Sports

Critic reviews

“In a story every bit as exciting and tear-jerking as any novel or movie in its genre - Hoosiers, Mighty Ducks, The Bad News Bears - Danny gets his chance at glory. Lupica...has the knowledge of the game and the lean prose to make this a taut, realistic story not just about the game but about heart, character, and family. A winner.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Lupica...sets the scene for on-court action, and delivers play-by-play descriptions...that will thrill basketball buffs. Genuinely affecting.” (Publishers Weekly)

The ending was well thought out and the characters had well thought out personalities.

Only some minor errors and the different basketball language used made me confused at parts.

Inspiring, gripping, a whale of a good tale.

Well written and chock full of tense moments. This story is beautifully narrated and shows the skill of Mr. Lupica at making sport come alive. One of his best.

Great story about perseverance

I read this book with my son. The story is realistic, and we could really relate to it.

Narrator

This narrorator is bad at conversations but is good at everything else. The story is pretty good but the no curses in this are weird

Travel team

This book is a great book but I would not recommended it to anyone under the age of 9 because it has some curse words

I enjoyed how the characters were developed and to see Danny grow not just as a player but as a coach while having fun.

One of the best books I've ever read in middle school!

I liked how all the characters were very similar. They all had a lot to do in their story!
