About this listen
James used to laugh and joke with the other third graders. Now he was angry, aggressive, and defiant. James was hurting, but Pastor Becky didn’t know how to help. Like many children’s pastors, she didn’t realize that a child in her ministry was experiencing symptoms of trauma. She wasn’t sure how to respond to his big feelings and challenging behaviors.
Trauma-Informed Children’s Ministry: A Practical Guide to Reaching Hurting Kids helps children’s ministry leaders understand trauma and strengthen their ministries to serve and disciple hurting kids.
Divorce, bullying, adoption, abuse. Learn how trauma touches the children you love and what most churches get wrong when it comes to teaching and disciplining children who have experienced trauma.
Why does Isaac keep talking back? Why is Sara under the table crying? Make sense out of the most frustrating, confusing, and heartbreaking child behaviors.
Through inspiring, real-life stories, discover practical, research-based strategies to begin transforming your ministry this Sunday.
Good intentions are not enough. Our changing society craves authentic churches equipped to reach all children. This powerful, groundbreaking book will help you:
- Cultivate caring relationships.
- Eliminate challenging behaviors.
- Encourage your team.
- Amplify your church’s impact in the community!

Maybe it was baseball season, with its many Sunday practices, which caused a normally committed family to miss church...only they didn't return when the season ended. For another family, it was the dance recital with its accelerated rehearsal schedule, which was "only temporary" but their return attendance was sporadic before it became non-existent.

Story
Most Christian parenting books are ready with exact practices every family should follow in order to raise obedient children. In this obedience-training model, faith is a wall, constructed brick by brick, as adults tell children what to believe and how to behave. But what if obedience is not the goal of Christian parenting? What if it’s our job as parents to instead help our kids get to know God and discover that God can be trusted? Woven can help children anchor to who God is and have faith practices that are rich, textured, and all their own.

Teachers show up in different forms and in many chapters of a child’s life. Teaching is literacy and numeracy, but most importantly, it’s showing up with your whole heart. It’s walking kids - and yourself - through the hardest conversations about trauma, loss, grief, racism, or violence. As we work to piece together our education system in the fallout from the global pandemic, the focus must be on the teachers. If the people in charge - those teachers - aren’t OK, the students don’t stand a chance.

Everyone Should Read This Book
Everyone can really benefit from reading this book. Whether you are a church leader, a parent, an adult living with trauma, a childless adult, a teacher, or non-religious person, everyone can learn something profound from this book's lessons, examples and research. I myself am a childless adult who doesn't attend any church, but this book taught me a lot about how I should interact with children and be sympathetic to their plights, whether they are deeply hurting, are neurodivergent, or just plainly being a kid who wants to relate to an adult and tell their story. It also taught me a lot about myself and the experiences I went through as a kid and how I behaved/reacted, and how those experiences still affect me to this day.
The stories this book follows and the churches that implemented affective methods for helping children (and their guardians) gives me a lot of hope that there is a church that is welcoming for people of all walks of life. The trauma these children went through were heartbreaking and brought me to tears, but I was equally moved to tears hearing how the church leaders helped those children rather than turning them away or giving up on them. The bible passages were extremely appropriate and eye-opening. I can't recommend this book enough to literally everyone. If you have a child struggling with trauma, or maybe you are that child now an adult, or just simply are someone who struggles interacting with children, this book will be an immense help to you and those around you.
I almost wish this book was a required reading for all potential church leaders!!
