Acerca de esta escucha

In Training for the New Alpinism, Steve House, world-class climber and Patagonia ambassador, and Scott Johnston, coach of US national champions and World Cup Nordic skiers, translate training theory into practice to allow you to coach yourself to any mountaineering goal. Applying training practices from other endurance sports, House and Johnston demonstrate that following a carefully designed regimen is as effective for alpinism as it is for any other endurance sport and leads to better performance. They deliver detailed instruction on how to plan and execute training tailored to your individual circumstances.

Whether you work as a banker or a mountain guide, live in the city or the country, are an ice climber, a mountaineer heading to Denali, or a veteran of 8,000-meter peaks, your understanding of how to achieve your goals grows exponentially as you work with this audiobook. Chapters cover endurance and strength-training theory and methodology, application, and planning, nutrition, altitude, mental fitness, and assessing your goals and your strengths.

Chapters are augmented with inspiring essays by world-renowned climbers, including Ueli Steck, Mark Twight, Peter Habeler, Voytek Kurtyka, and Will Gadd.

I’ll certainly buy the paper version of this book as a reference. The only issue I have with this audiobook is the awkward imperial and metric elevation citation for every single peak mentioned, and there are many... it definitely interrupts the flow. Maybe just pick one unit and stick with that.

Great book

The authors did a great job, bouncing between technical descriptions of training regimens and the logic behind them, and climbing stories, with lots of guest essays. I learned a lot and tended to agree with the opinions shared.
The narrator isn’t a climber which caused a number of confusing/amusing mispronunciations (“five point one three” for 5.13, “W-sixteen” for WI6, “Colon” Haley).

The Bible of alpinism

This book has good information but the way in which it is read makes it so unenjoyable I can’t even finish it. Just buy the book and read it yourself.

Horrible Reader Choice

This was a really great book for someone like me that has never been trained by a coach, or had a real scientific training plan.

absolutely worth the listen

This book was recommended to me years ago and I’m kicking myself for not having read it back then. I am not either an alpinist nor do I have any interest in mountains, but this book need not be only for people with Eiger dreams. Any endurance athlete can benefit from what it discusses in terms of physiology, psychology, and preparation. I may even pick up a used paper copy of the book so that I can use it as a reference, it is so dense and comprehensive that it requires more than one read. Thank you to the authors and I highly recommend this book.

Superb for athletes of all sports

I'm impressed. This book is hugely informative but yet managed to keep me entertained. The subjective view of the author about alpinism is very interesting. I also enjoyed how the book is full of excerpts and real life stories about other legendary alpinists and climbers. It has had a impact on my own life and future climbing ambitions. For any climber I would recommend it full heartedly. As a non native English speaker I also liked the narration.

Superb

How detailed. I've a long history with physical training so I understood the narrative well. This manual is incredibly detailed and very well laid out. If you are new to physical training, expect to read the book a few times to solidify the knowledge. There is a lot of technical detail related to human physiology and you need to understand the concepts in detail to be able to manipulate your physiology into action. This is not just a book for climbers, anyone interested in self-development cN benefit from the knowledge shared herein. Now to read it again.

A manual for life

I have a decent amount of training in my background and this right here is spot on. I have direct experience with many of the concepts spoken about, and I know they are on to something great. thank you for taking the time to create this wonderfully Informative and easy to digest book for the alpinist!

perfect training, no wasted time, do it

The content of this book is well crafted and super helpful (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)… BUT… keep in mind that “Chapter 4” of this book in audible is “Chapter 2” in the actual book. The lack of standards across audiobooks and audio book apps means that the value of the audiobook format for the purposes of learning (moving through the content somewhat non-linearly and with repetition) is unfortunately still very low.

Great publication; crappy audiobook

Very good training manual for alpinism. It really shines with going deep into the physiology of what's happening in the body when you train in certain ways. It's focus is on a very structured approach to training and how to over the long term to become elite if you are aiming for that. Standout parts for me were the benefits (or pitfalls) of certain Zones for training and how to structure them into your training for the months leading up to your climb.

Excellent training manual for mountain climbing
